hello everyone, I am need of help with an oil leak. I have got a 2006 E 450 that is leaking from the remote oil filter oil lines. I have replaced the lines and the housing with no luck. I do have dye in it, and in order for it to leak it must be driven. when it begins to leak it will trail down the oil cooler and down the drivers side head. I noticed when I installed the new lines and the hold down at the housing the lines were not held tight by the upper hold down. the lines will move about half inch back and forth, the lines were not tight until the retaining bracket on the drivers side head was tightened. is that normal? I also had trouble getting the new lines the drivers side is labeled wrong and when we ordered it we kept getting two passenger side lines, we finnaly got the correct one and still have a leak, help!!

I can't comment on the oil lines because I haven't BTDT. Is it possible that your leak is crankcase vapor oil and not LP oil? I'm assuming that you have run it at WOT in the shop to try and find the leak. Being that it only leaks when driven makes me want to think of a crankcase vapor leak. A quick test in the shop to confirm this would be to disconnect and plug the vent hose from the valve cover to the turbo inlet and use the output side of a shop vac to pressurize the crankcase at the oil fill neck while it's idling. I have found this to be a wonderful trick on both gas and diesels that want to leak when driven, but not in the shop. The output of a shop vac normally produces about 1psi and won't hurt any seals or gaskets, but will immediately show a crankcase leak.

Just thinking out loud.

Good Luck!

You could smoke the bitch too. Meaning that you would hook the smoke machine up to the crankcase and see where it is coming out of. The shop vac idea is a good one too.

Oh and having a neck like a giraffe and a head the size of a sparrow might be quite desireable as well. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

thank you for the fast replys!! hotline had the idea of using regulated shop air down to 2lbs and applying to dipstick tube and watching for the leak, they also said to make sure it is no more than 2lbs or the front or rear main will blow out /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/eek.gif that, I have not tried yet. I am sure it is low pressure oil because it is a pretty heavy green trail that comes down from top of the oil cooler and runs down, I also forgot to bring up the sending unit, it is dry and the connector is clean this is also a shuttle bus with only 38,000 miles. Back to the tubes I am wondering if I am just installing them dead wrong. The way I have been doing it is by pushing them into the bore and then tighting the hold down clamp, then the retaining bracket for the tubes to hold them in place. how have you guy's installed them? also trying to find any info on them in the manual is slim to none. thanks again for everyones help i will dig into this tomorrow and update. thanks !!
