Jim Warman
I do them in the truck with the heads on.... you'll need an assistant when it comes time to torque the branch tube into place (just to line up the socket). Instead of using a torx socket on your extension, I recommend taking a 1/4" deep socket with a thin wall and welding a torx bit in to that and then welding that on to a 10" 1/4 drive extension.... There will be no chance of losing anything inside the motor with that set up. Once the job is complete, you'll wonder what all the hoopla is about.... T'ain't half as bad as we make it sound /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
mchan68
The last one I did was on an E-Series cubevan. Once the engine was out, it wasn't too bad. I pulled two head bolts for access I think. It you remove the head bolts, and count the number of turns, just remember to tighten it with one extra turn, and you'll be good to go. DamageINC
I just de-cab the bastards and do it like that... heads stay on. Pull the trans/t-case out as an assy with the cherry-picker and then pop the branch tube in. Long 1/4 locking extension and a torx bit, pull the bolts out (and gat them started again) with a good reliable magnet. Haven't had any problems that way so far. Mekanik
Why do you have to remove head bolts in a econoline? Has anyone done a branck tube in an econoline without removing the engine? I have dove 1 branch tube in a f series. It wasn't the worst thing in the world. I had one in a econoline that was a little bent and I just bent it back. Of course I air tested when I was done, but there were no problems.
lraffe1
I have done two in chasis with out pulling heads. Just be careful when removing and intalling hold down bolts.
Keith Browning
Why do you have to remove head bolts in a Econoline? Who is telling you to remove head bolts? As per the shop manual, removal of any head bolt requires replacing the head gasket.
Mekanik
Thats what I don't understand. It is the same engine in a f-series and a e-series. I didn't have a problem with the head bolts. I have not had to do a branch tube in an econoline yet, but why does the engine have to come out?
