Weekly..... VERY weakly (notice the play on words)....

Our Journeyman line techs (both diesel specialist) are flat rate... you might say that they do quite well for themselves.

I'm hourly.... most people wouldn't want my job... the hours are long and just because it's coffee time or lunch time or 5:00 don't mean squat.

It's important to learn how to write a repair description, make sure you list all the combinations and any extra time spent (make punches) for mud, siezed bolts or customer add-ons (remember - if you made a punch to take something off - make one to put it back on).

Writing your story can be almost an art form... and doing it "right" can make or break your paycheque....

You guys just knew I couldn't give a "simple" answer, didn't you? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif

I am on the flat rape system with a bonus of XX cents per hour produced by my other techs based on productivity. I don't prefer it as a tech or shop foreman. I think that the flat rate system breeds dishonesty. I think a hybrid system that rewards quality, diverse, productive work is a better way. I understand that the flat rate system increases productivity by incentivizing it, but I think it does so at the cost of honesty and quality. Hourly workers have been known to lack motivation. I realize however that a good system that does what I want it to do would have an excessive level of complexity that would not make it workable for the payroll department. No good answers.

We just switched to hourly for several reasons but we are also truck shop. We deal with alot of crap that you just cant make flat rate on. There are pros and cons to each and working on both flat rate and hourly the both can be good. Not sure which one I like better but with work being spread thin here in AZ its nice to have a stable paycheck

I think I have an ideal pay plan for a tech or working foreman like myself. The details can be adjusted to the situation and the technicians abilities, skill, training... Technically I am flat rate but I have a generous guarantee that I can live on and most of the time I do. But, I still try to be productive as long as the work is there and I have hourly rate increases for meeting several levels of hours produced. I have been told many times that I am to keep doing the best work that I can, fix the problems and worry about hours second. (but try to make hours son) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/wink.gif I still have an incentive and I still try despite the CONSTANT stream of really shitty work.

On top of that I get a weekly bonus for my time as a team leader/foreman to dispatch and track work, help and teach my techs. It works for both the company and myself and I guess I am doing the right thing... I started with this company when I graduated high school, 21 years ago! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/icon_crazy.gif Am I crazy? Maybe but I am surviving. With no opportunities for a change and a stay at home wife with two young children it looks like I am going to be there for a little while longer.
