vital parts amuck in the engine

Yes but it required removing the oil pans which I am thinking is NOT the answer you want to hear. Unfortunately retrieving these parts/pieces is important as the oil pick-up screen is course enough to allow rocks, sticks and even small children through which can do a number on the lube oil pump and front cover. You would be amazed at what can pass through the screen. I had a rocker failure that spewed the needle bearings into the crankcase which were sucked into the inlet and destroyed the pump and even PASSED the pump getting into the regulator. I did get lucky with one truck in that it was a 4.5L in an LCF - the pan is completely accessible.

I am sure others have a story or two to tell.

We have 1 in the shop right now that has 2 injectors with broken snap rings and missing pieces. It got towed in for not having any icp pressure when hot. He has the valve covers off, and I suggested he remove the upper and lower pans. How much deeper should he have to dig to find these pieces. Maybe remove the oil pump cover?

We had the same thing in our shop. Found bits of the snap rings in the oil filter. After removing the LP oil pump, we found more pieces inside it and the pump destroyed.

Small children through the pickup tube, indeed.

Anyone think of the reasoning behind the screen sizing?

Idle thoughts, late at night..... I haven't seen the GPM rating of the 6.0 oil pump..... I do know they stop running when oil in the pan gets to about 3 or 4 litres..... (compared to the 7.3s I have seen at about 7 litres).

From this, I "assume" that the pick up is closer to the floor of the pan.... Is there a chance for cavitation? I don't know.... But the volume of oil "consumed" by the injectors is going to be significant.

The opening on the 6.0 oil pick up isn't any larger than any others I have seen - and this includes gas motors that don't have the high volume demands HEUI injectors are going to demonstrate.....

Bottom line.... somewhere there is an engineer... he has a particular point of view..... I would like to see things from his point of view.... but I can't get my head that far up my ass..... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whattodo.gif

Jim im friends and related with a couple ford engineers (not 6.0l) and they told me "if you have a problem with a design, write it on a warranty R.O." They read every single warranty r.o that pertains to their department. That's how tsb's, ssm's and FSA's are born. If you want to get more personal ( which im very sure you do) you write on the back "need to speak with engineer" and they will call you. Those are from the words of the people that design what we work on.

I'm guessing to prevent oil starvation on a 0F day with 15W40 in the pan. I have pics of the coarse screen in the 6.0 tube, but not pics of the 7.3 tube. I seem to remember that the DT has a coarse screen, also....

Well then why not simply increase the size of the pick up to allow for a finer screen? The screen does not have to be a 10 micron filter but if it can prevent a bad situation from becoming catastrophic then it makes sense to me. Looking at the size of the pan the end of the pick up could be four times larger. Am I thinking to far outside of the box?

Every single oil cooler ive taken out i have found the screen resevoir damaged. Even on trucks that have never had a problem til the oil cooler restricted taking the egr cooler with it. What does that tell me? I think they need to make that screen a little bit larger also to stop whatever is breaking so i can see what took it out. IMO i agree with finer pickup screen also, but same to the resevoir screen in the block.

Seriously, if you get a truck with broken injectors and missing pieces, how far will you go to find them?

Will Ford pay to remove the oil pans and the oil pump just to find the bits and pieces?

Ford should have a tsb for this. Remove oil pans, oil pump cover, oil filter, oil cooler, valve covers. Inspect and remove all metal pieses, and then install a new oil pick up with a fine screen.
