iceman
well here it goes guys, truck has about 19,000 on the ticker comes in blowing white smoke and over heats, found truck hydrolocked, found coolant pouring out ebp port removed all glow plugs then performed compression test found 4 and 8 low at around 200 pulled cab found horizontal egr cooler blown. contacted hotline said to remove water pump. found cavitation behind pump thru front cover, pulled head as per hotline found cyl 4 bent rod and cyl8 cylinder burnt and washed out this will be my second unit these suck aint nothing like a sicko egr cooler thats gravy
Torqued_Up
Are you getting an engine for this or will you be repairing it? I am curious what the cost cap is on the 6.
snw blue by you
well here it goes guys, truck has about 19,000 on the ticker comes in blowing white smoke and over heats, found truck hydrolocked, found coolant pouring out ebp port removed all glow plugs then performed compression test found 4 and 8 low at around 200 pulled cab found horizontal egr cooler blown. contacted hotline said to remove water pump. found cavitation behind pump thru front cover, pulled head as per hotline found cyl 4 bent rod and cyl8 cylinder burnt and washed out this will be my second unit these suck aint nothing like a sicko egr cooler thats gravy Curious as to the cause. Was the impeller damaged? How was it determined there was cavitation? Did the pump fail causing the overheat and melt the EGR cooler, or the other way around? How is it the customer did not see the signs of a cooling issue? Or did they and said to themselves "Screw it". Is there some other underlying issue, such as the fan clutch? I've yet had a waterpump fail on a 6.0. I've had meltdowns due to say, a failed cooler, then the customer continues to drive it until components melt. How many miles? Not alot of 6.4 experience yet. iceman
the cause was sand casting in the engine causing porosity then leading to cavitatiion and eventually over heating the engine then blowing the egr cooler yes i am putting an engine in i am not sure of the cost cap but hotline did say piston and rod and crank kits are avalible
Keith Browning
Stephen, I believe there are a couple other posts that mention front cover cavitation presumably caused by casting sand. Sounds crazy in this day and age but apparently it is true. It looks as though there are a few problems that are coming to light now that this engine is "in the wild" and really testing it. DieselD
had a cavitation issue on a 6.0 once. from what Ive heard its caused by a low coolant concern or improper cooling system maintance.
snw blue by you
Curious! What coolant I see there appears to be green, is that correct? I see this on fleet trucks, and if they are reluctant to retain the gold (usually because they buy in bulk), I highly recomend using the coolant additive. I have explained that cooling system failures will not be covered if the system is not maintained properly. Of course, you then have to explain the differences, and so on, and so on. Great pic BTW. Remember the old Chevy Targetmaster engines that were made in Mexico. Shitty cams, heads, etc. due to poor casting sand. I wonder if these black bombs come from the same casting plant. I used to joke around that ford brake rotors and chevy camshafts were made from the same metal. Now I think the black bomb is from the same material.
