Do you guys see a lot of worn out input shafts on 6 speed ZF transminnions? Of the 2 that I have had out, both input shafts have been worn out from the pilot bearing that is basically blown to pieces.

There is an upgrade aftermarket pilot bearing/input shaft reapair kit that you can through TECKPACK FITZALL. The part number is KPBZ73HD. It is an awsome kit. Comes witha a new pilot bearing that is letterally twice the size of the that little piece of crap ford bearing, a nice thick speady sleave that repairs the shaft and a driver for the sleeve. We charge $70.00 Canadian for these. I guess that would be about $72.00 American now EHHH? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/poke.gif I put one in on my own truck and they are a great kit. We sell them as an upgrade antime we do a clutch or have the tranny out for whatever reason. Never ever had one fail yet. Make sure you grease the bearing when you put it in. Try this: http://www.teckpak-fitzall.com/spgm.cfm?id=KPBZ73HD

This one is for the 7.3l applications though. I am assuming that is what you may be talking about. I never have any problems with the newer 6.0L application ZF's.

Oh yeah and it beats the shit out of the price of replacing an input shaft.

I've probably had a dozen or more ZF transmissions out for one reason or another. I can't remember not seeing a messed up input shaft and pilot bearing. I usually price out an input shaft replacement if I wasn't already going into the trans. Most customers turn it down and I let them know that it won't effect the trans anyway. But I do put a new bearing in. Also 5 spds did it too.

I just did a bedplate seal on a 2006 F350 6.0/ZF combo. When I pulled the trans out, I knicked the pilot bearing a bit, so I changed it. I noticed that the grease looked REALLY ratty/dried out/ and rusty and this truck only has 18,000KMS on it. The grease that was in the new one was this really thin yellow shit. Wonder if that's the same stuff that's in the bearing from the factory? Could be the cause of the failure.
