have a 2002 f-450 than after setting for a few hours will start fine then stall out then it takes a while of cranking to get it back going but when it does it will run the rest of the day how common is low pressure oil pump problems on these engines.the truck has 104000 miles or am i on the wrong track fuel pressure is good, glow plugs and relay ok.the only thing i see is the icp pressure is slow to build after setting but only one time till it sits again it's ok any ideas?

Just kind of a stupid question, but when was the oil changed last? I had one not long ago that had a extended interval on a p/m and was the problem. It could be more but it helps if you know about the basics first. I'm just a parts guy but I am willing to help however I can.

Like Dwayne, I'm looking to a base oil concern... Something I've seen is the front engine cover badly scored inside the oil pump housing (one of those was an FQR with only 12,000 kms since install).

What can happen is that the base oil system will lose it's prime and then can't pick it back up before the reservoir runs dry.... Try jacking the back end of the truck up a couple of feet when you next expect the problem to manifest itself... This will raise the oil level in the pick up tube and make it easier for the engine to re-establish base oil system prime.

If that's not an option, you can monitor base oil pressure with a mechanical gauge at the fitting just above the oil filter and watch how long it takes that to build.

It sounds like everybody is giving good advice. I have seen a couple that would start and run 15 seconds, run the reservoir dry, stall, and not restart. The problem turned out to be a worn LP pump. On one, I had the guy pull the gears and they looked fine. I told him to take a feeler gauge and measure between the gear teeth like this:

His bad one measured .013-.015". I had a new pump on the shelf which measured .003-.004". He sent me the old gears, which "looked" OK and not worn to the eye. New gears fixed it.

The problem is the .013-.015" gap allows the whole LP oil system to drain back into the pan after shutoff hot. On start up, not only do you have completely dry LP galleys, but you also have a LP pump which is struggling to prime. By the time it primes and fills the galleys, the reservoir goes dry.

Good Luck! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
