jaysonfordtech
So I get an 03 in that is smoking like a 7.3 right after injector o-rings. I self test and find a cyl 3 contribution code. I attempt to perform relative compression test and the engine tries to start. I decide to pull the glow plug and do a manual compression test. I found the cyl to have better than 400 psi, and lots of fuel. I pull the nozzle and scrub the tip to find a crack 3/4 of the way from one side of the copper to the other. I am replacing the injector and buss bar, then retest, I was thinking possible loss of fuel pressure could cause this??? What do you guys think? DwayneGorniak
I have never seen this on a 7.3l but have seen it on Sick-0's. The ones I have had like that on Sick-0's all had faulty fuel pumps or had had pumps changed in the past. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/2cents.gif
Bruce Amacker
I've never seen this on a Ford but have seen it a few times on IH DT engines. IH has a TSI letter stating the proper way to bleed the fuel system after a filter change or when there's air in it. (Pump hand primer, unhook CMP or injector harness, crank 30 seconds, clear codes) They claim if there is a mixture of air and fuel under the plunger, it comes down too quick, and the resulting pressure rise is too fast for the nozzle to handle, and it departs. The resulting damage is major FUGLY.
DamageINC
That's actually a great picture though, you get a good look at the fuel chamber and even the small little path that the fuel takes as it's LEAVING the injector. I can imagine the damage that kinda thing would cause though. Dave
jaysonfordtech
WOW, mine is not that bad! Thats cool. I was just curious so I wire brushed the tip and found the crack in this injector. Thanks for the info and the pic.

I haven't had a bad fuel pump on a 6.0l yet , but I have replaced many injectors on vehicles that loose fuel pressure on accel from plugged filters. LARRY BRUDZYNSKI
Bruce had a guy come in today(early this morning) bought a injector for a DT466, came back about 2 hours later pissed off. He was all pissed, said we had shit injectors(lol) We took one look at it(Exactly the same as your picture) and I told him about this thread on the site, he didn't believe me, my fuel guy Bill had told him the same thing about the DT466's(Prime,CMP,Crank 30 seconds to bleed) when changing injectors or fuel filters but didn't believe it until I showed him this thread. He has since changed his attitude about his whole experience with this injector. By the way we changed out the injector tip N/C he's happy now and his customer is on the road. I believe that he would not have believed us unless I had the pic of the injector with the broken tip and the valuable text along with it. Thanks big time for the Doc's/Pic's on this it worked great...When you come to town p/m me Drinks and Dinner are on me!!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif
