ranger diesel

I am going to look at a 86 ranger diesel on saturday. the seller told me that it is a texas truck and is rust free, but it has been sitting for the last 10 years and doesn't run. I have been searching to see if parts are somewhat available and for the most part I can still get injectors, timing belts, and so on. My main concern is the turbo, I think that it will need to be rebuilt or replaced because of sitting so long. I am afraid that when I get it running that a seal in the turbo will go out and I will have a runaway. Anyone know of a place that either rebuilds or sells rebuild kits? any other suggestions are welcomed.

I bet any pump shop could do the turbo, but I wouldn't be concerned about it until there was a problem. I'm sure Larry will look into it for you. If you're worried about the turbo, hold it still with a wood dowel while you fire the engine up until it gets oil pressure. I know nothing about these engines, but I'm guessing there's higher worries on the list than the turbo. If I looked at it, I would not try to fire it up on location. I'd drag it back and fill the FF with Stanadyne first. Is it a belt drive cam? Pay attention to it and the idlers if you want to avoid problems.

Good Luck!

Thank's larry if I buy it I will be sure to give you a call.

This engine has a belt drive cam and injection pump. I really don't know that much about these engines, but I am finding more out with everyones help. I am not going to try to start it when I go look at it I am just going to bar it over by hand to see if it is free and check the turbo play.

I actually owned one of these beasts. THe one I got had been sitting for awhile to. after I got the glow plugs and the choke working it fired right up. there not the fastes truck but the look on peoples faces when the ask whats wrong with your ranger and you tell them its a diesel. I don't have it anymore because the body was falling off. but it was fun to have.

Yeah I had one of these a long time ago, Wouldn't get out of it's own way but ran great and had great fuel mileage, the only problem was the rest of the truck rotted away.

I'll be glad to help anyway possible. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif

Does anyone know if the engine was a interference motor or freewheel?

All diesels are interference engines, remember that the combustion chamber is usually in the top of the piston and the head is flat. Look in a WSM to verify if you want, by looking at the pictures of pistons and the head.

Good Luck!

I bought the truck-it is locked up, but the timing belts are not broke. The seller said that it was running when it was parked 13 years ago. I am going to get it pulled out this spring and go threw the whole thing and make it dependable. I will give you a call Larry when I get it apart to have you check out the turbo and injection pump.

Anything you need just call. By the way I was screwing around and came across this site. Check out the huge /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gifHP on these engines, a far cry from what we have now.

  • 1 month later...

One of my Caribbean connections just bought 6 new Rangers built in Thailand for $14,000 each with 2.5 diesels from Conrico. He also says in his native Trinidad there are 2007 F-250's running around with a 4.2 turbo diesel. He thinks the F's are built in the US. Has anybody heard of that?

Check out the specs and the torque ratings. I think converting from Newton meters to ft/lbs is to multiply times .73.

That gives 3 diesel engine options with 240-277 ft/lb torque.

"sigh"

P.S. This guy has broken trucks up to his armpits and we're talking road trip. Today's grief is a 2006 6.0, 20K, already had new injectors, sounds like they're leaking and aerating the fuel by the IDS balance graph, the turbo impeller shaft is seized, and the EGR was coked open. It's owned by Carnival Cruise Line, who owns a large complex there.

No Ford dealers, so no warranty...... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif

I would love to see some of these new trucks and some of the older ones, and help out any way I can. Not to mention the sunny beaches and babes are a plus /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif

Just checked out the specs on the Truck, very impressive to say the least. I love the interior, the dash board rocks!!! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif
