03-04 F250 stall in reverse

We have a F250 6.0 torqueshift that stalls only when put in reverse, We disconnected the backup light switch and truck runs. Could this be one of those shitty wire harness problems we keep seeing? Switch tests good,no codes set. The tech didn't give me much info to go on...

You know, it sounds retarded but I've had a couple that would do this simply because the trans fluid was about 2 quarts low. I almost didn't believe it, but I've fixed 3 trucks like that now. (One of them was a gas engine with an E4OD) but it's certainly worth a check..

Every time though, shift into reverse and it'd engage, and just stall out. Fill it properly, problem was solved. Hopefully yours turns out as easily fixed...

Larry... is your tech really sure that it is a back up lamp switch he has disconnected? There is no "dedicated" back up lamp switch on these transmissions.

The DTR sensor is inside the pan on the 5R110. This signals the PCM what gear is selected... the PCM turns on the back up lamps through a relay when reverse is selected.

The only lock up problems with Torqshift I have seen (quite a few) causing engine stall during engagement were caused by sticking solenoids. Most suspect is the EPC solenoid causing erratic or low line pressure. Look for debris in the pan that will cause this. Small metal particles easily pass though the pick up screen because it is after all, a screen and not a true filter. See THIS ARTICLE on recall 04B24 I wrote way back when this was a common concern. The bottom left photograph shows the tell-tale debris which can come from any mechanical failure, not just the one sited in the recall. From time to time we still see this failure on units that escaped the recall.
