Has anyone else run into one with what sounds like a valvetrain tick that can only be heard at idle?Contacted hotline on this and was informed to increase and decrease icp and listen for noise change.I did,but noise remained. Was told that Ford is aware of this, but no fix yet.Tick noise will skip a beat about

every 5 seconds. Was told they are seeing this after first oil change.

Brain fart.... we haven't seen much in the way of identifiable running concerns.... though we have had a sudden influx of cold weather driven codes. When I saw "ICP", I suddenly thought "HPOP" for some reason.... (might have something to do with 50+ hour weeks and too much entry level staff).

For the cold weather driven check engine lights.... A lot of P0196s - they didn't appear until guys started using their engine heaters. Lots of EGT codes - apparently, these systems are having a tough time completing regens in the cold... P132Bs from iced up EBPs.

FWIW... cold = -40ish

I have seen 3 of these. The first one we took too long over christmas break and the fleet company took the truck to another dealer where it was heard but then dissapeared never to return. With this truck it needed to be drivin about 5 miles and it sounded like someone was arching a sparkplug wire (tack! tack!) It went away on decel when the injectors were silent, dissabling cylinders, messing the the fuel pressure did nothing. It was loudest about 1500rpm in neutral.

The other 2 had a similar sounding noise, did need to be warm but only needed to be drivin around the parking lot. The noise was there on accel and decel. Again fuel pressure and cyl dissabline did nothing to change the noise.

I was told by a hotline dude to replace the crank in the 1st one (gear basklash issue). After a call from a tech that saw my post on on FMCD with a similar problem I called back and got a diffrent guy and he said hold off.

The call on the 2nd truck I recived the "its under investigation at this time" shpeal.

an official statement on this concern... File attached

TSB 08-19-5

Some 2008 F-Super Duty 250-550 vehicles equipped with a 6.4L diesel engines may exhibit a random engine ticking / tapping noise that is most noticeable when engine coolant temperature is 185 degrees F (85 degrees C) or higher and from base idle to approximately 1500 RPM. Some customers may complain that this noise becomes more evident after 3000-5000 miles have accumulated on the vehicle or after an engine oil change.

ACTION:

Follow the Service Information.

SERVICE INFORMATION

The ticking / tapping noise is most noticeable at the rear of the driver's side front wheel well. 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel engines exhibit this normal audible condition (some engines will exhibit greater audible noise due to engine build variations). 6.4L Powerstroke Diesel engines are manufactured to tight tolerances in order to meet strict durability and reliability standards.

This noise is caused by the relationship between engine block, crankshaft journals, bearing inserts and oil viscosity / film. This relationship allows a pulsation that resonates through the cylinder block and is heard as a metallic ticking noise. This condition is present on all diesel engines.

Technological improvements and overall noise reduction in today's diesel engines make this issue seem new when in fact it was masked by other noises on previous engines. Other engine manufacturers report similar conditions in their diesel engines. Vehicle testing and engine tear down analysis have confirmed this condition will not effect reliability or long term durability of this engine.

Dealers should not attempt to perform vehicle to vehicle noise comparisons. This may lead to incorrect conclusions and ineffective repairs.

NOTE: DO NOT ATTEMPT REPAIRS FOR THIS NORMAL NOISE CONDITION. REPLACING THE ENGINE OR INTERNAL COMPONENTS WILL NOT REDUCE OR ELIMINATE THE TICKING / TAPPING NOISE. PLEASE PROVIDE THIS BULLETIN TO CUSTOMERS THAT INQUIRE ABOUT THIS CONDITION.

OMG, there is a huge construction company that has a good amount of 6.4L's. Some have the ticking noise some don't. The fleet manager wants them fixed. Why don't the other trucks do it. This guy is already fuming about the fact that 6.4's "make oil" in between oil changes and 3/4'' to 1 inch above full is normal. He was cursing the service writer over the phone because he couldnt believe Ford thinks that it's normal. Thank God i gave him the hotline request stating all that is normal to cover my ass /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/readthis.gif . I still have mixed feeling about this engine. Why in gods name couldnt they not just keep the 6.0L (cant believe i just said that)
