Keith Browning
Today I performed a PDI on a 2008 Econoline with a 6.0L in it. No aftertreatment system, no DPF, just the same catalyst and muffler. This thing couldn't possibly meet 2008 emissions standards could it? Do you think Ford is paying fines or something? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif
Aaron
Yep. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif There was a writeup about it somewhere, International is biting some of it, and Ford is biting some of the fine. ONLY for this model year, it was a special exemption. I heard roughly $400/each, per engine, IIRC. Let me see if I can find it for ya. Jeff_
One of the Ford instructors told me about it. He said for 08, the diesel powered E series are on whats called "emissions credits" which means they pay a fine for every one they build. He said it is a temporary solution until they figure out what to do for the long term. Ambulances require Diesel power by law apparently, and unfortunately ambulance builders love the van chassis. (Obviously they have never tried fixing one.) He also said that this is the reason for the body restyle on the 08 E-series, they supposedly have a working prototype with a diesel that meets the emissions standards, and the additional space required to house it was the motivation behind the body restyle. He wouldn't say if it is a 6.4 or something else altogether. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/cover.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/ford.gif
Alex Bruene
Just like the 2003 7.3L Econoline... credits... But, I yesterday saw my first LCF with a DPF.
Aaron
Ambulances require Diesel power by law apparently, Where's this? Nationwide? Where I used to live here, in London, Ontario, we had several gasoline powered ambulances. They were GM's though. I've seen several places around here getting sour tastes in their mouth over the sicko fiasco, and are switching to gasoline.
Tony302600
2 months ago i already had to work on 2 6.0L 08 evans... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/sick.gif
Jeff_
I'm not sure Aaron, It is something my instructor mentioned, but in my own research I came up with this: Ambulance info I'd much prefer gas powered ambulances...then I wouldn't have to work on the bastards. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/puke.gif
Keith Browning
Good find on that article Jeff. Id doesn't support the idea that using a diesel engine is mandatory but explains why diesels are preferred. I didn't realize just how high of a percentage Ford chassis were used for these types of vehicles.
snw blue by you
Don't you just love this comment? "The gas engine alternative is less attractive, because the diesel engines get better gas mileage"
Aaron
Like I said, i find it kind of unusual that he ambulances they are switching over to gas also happen to be GM's.
