Poor Ford Diesel Tech

I'm selling my 04 F-150, I need a little more ass than a 5.4L 3-valve pig can give me. Now being a diesel tech I want to drive a hulking 4wd smoke billowing monster but due to Ford's fantastic resale value I cant afford a 6.0L. I personally like 6.0L they have gobs of power and with bulletproofing even more potential. So due to my limited budget and me being 21 and silly shit being important to me I am looking at 99-02 2500 dodges with a cummins. I'd be thrilled to be able to dump 2k - 3k into a relatively stock truck and when the mood strikes me make a reasonably safe 1000ft/lbs. If theres anyone with some insight I would like to know of any typical problems with these motors and reasonably priced mods to jack up numbers and keep it safe.

I agree with Larry, the trans is going to be the first weak link. I rebuilt mine myself but it is not a "performance" rebuild. I would look to Goerend or HTS, they seem to have a good rep. There is also the notorious LP fuel pump failures, and there is some problem with "fifty-something" blocks(an id number stamped on the block). I am a 12V fan so I dont know much about the 24V but there is a ton of good info on the cummins websites.

Yeah the Lift pumps suck on these trucks, Definitly change it out before you get to deep into it. These trucks have a problem that if the lift pump goes bad that it starves the injection pump and burns it out also. Just make sure you have good fuel supply all the time. We sell a Fuel pressure kit for just that reason.

I have worked on a few dodges. The 24 valves are pretty good engine with exception to the fuel systems. The lift pump in the tank can be troublesome causing low fuel pressure. They have also found that a bit of design flaw in the injection pump can lead to pump seizure. One of the circuit boards in the injection pump can also fail. These problems are fairly easy to fix however not the cheapest. The transmissions are the biggest problems with them. If you get a six speed manual you will have the least amount of problems. One thing I like about the cummins is that it is a very strong platform. You can build a lot of powerful relatively safely witht the stock base engine. Building the type of power you want to would be a lot cheaper with the cummins as opposed to a 6.0 well good luck with your decision. I however I am a ford guy and wouldnt be caught dead in one of those ugly dodges. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rofl.gif
