kevin phillips
We have two vcm's one good, one not on update. One was for pds use and the other for ids use.The pocket pc battery went completly dead and lost the pds program and it was up to date at the time .Now when i try to reload it says the vcm is out of date and it is, but the dealer just updated one of them so now one of our units is down.Question Could pds be downloaded back to the pocket pc then connected to the good ids vcm to update the code then be transfered back to the out of date vcm and work. Thanks for any ideas,i really don't want to buy the update myself but i may have to since the dealer says they allready paid for update on one and it should work.Hopefully someone has tried this. Keith Browning
You would need to know what version of PDS you had or try an old one just to see what happens. Since I have trouble downloading the software at work I usually do it at home and burn it on a disk. I may have a few older versions you could try if you would like... Jim Warman
The VCM software and the PDS software have to "match".... Latest version is B54 and the VCM disc you rec'd should be all you need (it will load to the PFM proggie on your computer and then, when the PDS is placed in the cradle, the PDS will be updated.... The next time the PDS tool is used, it should update the VCM). Of course, this all depends on if the subscription for the VCM is due or not. When the VCM is purchased, it comes with (IIRC) a two year subscription... after that, somebody, somewhere has to open a chequebook... Each VCM has a unique serial number so there is no opportunity for fudging... I'm not real sure about any of our scan tools anymore... I'm pretty sure that none of them miss any opportunity to "phone home".
Keith Browning
I am not so sure about that Jim, my IDS is up to date as is my VCM but my PDS is a little behind because I don't use the cradle unless I have to as I plug in the charger to the PDA adapter connector when I tuck it way in my cart. I recently started using my PDS more frequently which means I have to swap my VCM between the two. The other day I was using my PDS and I got a software update message but I was able to bypass it and continue until... I then noticed the VCM was reprogramming while connected to the PDS. Did it go backward? When I reconnected to my IDS the VCM reprogrammed again. I am at a loss for an explanation as I thought reprogramming only went forward. I'll have to look at my version info tomorrow. I could swear my PDS is two or three versions behind unless IT is capable of going on to the Internet and getting updates on its own. I do have an open wireless network in my shop and my PDA is connected whenever it is on. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif
kevin phillips
keith, it might be worth a try.it was version forty eight i think it had it wouldn't do 2006 6.0 liters and foward. If i had a 06 or newer 6.0 i kept a 2005 stored and would log in under it and it worked fine.i think i could get it back up and running with a older model disc right before they went to the version 50 i think but i'm unsure. Jim Warman
I don't think backward or forward matters.... The PDS or IDS expects the VCM to be at a compatable level and will flash program the VCM to suit. If it doesn't see what it expects to see... it changes it. I have four VCMs so I don't have to swap and change.... I still dislike the PDS for it's small display and limited capabilities. For "driveway diagnostics" it's size makes it a little more manageable but isn't a real Godsend. I'm a big fan of voluptuous women.... The IDS is that woman... Soft and curvy and easy to look at.....
