skidoo700
Have an oil leak that seems to be coming from head gasket corners? Have added dye, run, cleaned off run again looks like head gasket corners? Replaced glow plug harnesses both and hot side cac hose, both leaking. Can't get a real good dye trace from anywhere else. Any one seen head gaskets leak oil here externally? Tony302600
I would bet the rocker cover if anything. That's rare, but very very possible. I had one I could have sworn was from the headgasket, but ended up being a rocker cover gasket.
Jeff_
I've had a couple where the rocker carrier o-ring (between the cast iron cylinder head and the aluminum rocker carrier) have leaked. If this is what you find, you'll be doing a head gasket too since the head bolts need to come out to separate the cylinder head halves. I've never seen a 6.0 leak any fluid externally from the actual head gaskets...lots of internal coolant leaks though. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/puke.gif Oooh, don't forget to have hotline bless this repair prior to doing it, unless you're a level 1 dealer. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rolleyes.gif /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/ford.gif
Keith Browning
But there is no pressurized oil passages in the 6.0L head... there are oil drain passages though, one such passage near the lower rear bolt... Those layered gaskets don't seem to rot either. ( I did see a 7.3L head gasket rot and leak at the rear corner) Thinking out loud here... Oooh! I had one that was difficult to diagnose and it was showing at the rear lower corner of the right head. It ended up being a crack in the block between the oil cooler opening and the fire deck of the right bank. The oil traveled along the gasket on top, ran down the rear of the gasket between the head and the block and dripped onto the starter... Still thinking out loud... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/whistle.gif
Aaron
HPOP cover gasket maybe? I Have seen them leaking out the corners of the head gaskets. Guy down the hall from me just did one. We were also confused as to the leak, because there's no pressurized oil in the heads. But that's what it was. He swung the cab off and we looked, and sure as shit, it was leaking out of the heads. Lookit all that neon oil!! ^^^
Keith Browning
Quote: Lookit all that neon oil!! That is what oil dye looks like when the oil and engine are brand new. That green sheen is peculiar! This is a good example showing why the dye works better with clean oil. Without all of the black soot to mask the UV dye it shows better under the UV light. Aaron
+1000 on that one Keith! Trying to find an oil leak on something with a gajillion miles on it that's poorly maintained is really hard to do. You've gotta use about 50 packs of dye. I think I should start buying the shit by the gallon. Always wondered what it'd be like to ingest a bunch of that dye and go to the hospital or something, and get a whole bunch of tests that would reveal glowing, like a piss test, or puke somewhere near a UV light. Or, failing that, throw up on the floor in a place that has lotsa blacklights, like...an adult entertainment venue? I would bet that the bouncers wouldn't throw you out. I'm weird, but it would be kinda funny.

I know we are wandering off topic but I have to tell this story. Step into my wayback machine to a time when I was much younger, smoked many things and caroused with the boys at the Jersey shore. One of my buddies parents owned a house at the shore which he, me and a few of our friends rented for a season. For some reason, the main room had a black light in it.One day at work I apparently had something in my eye that I rubbed and scratched my cornea. It hurt worse and worse as the evening went on as I drove the hour to Belmar. I never made it without finding a hospital to look at my eye. As many of us know they put UV dye in your eyes to help them find foreign objects like sand and glass. What ever damaged my eye had probably teared out and after the exam I was given a prescription and went on my way.It was night by the time I got to the shore house. The fellas had already began partying and then I walk in through the clouds of smoke with one, really brightly glowing yellow eye! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif I can still see their faces! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif

Alex Bruene
I had one some time ago that I found running down the left head from the top. After hours of dye checking I determined it was coming from the rocker carrier to head seal. I pulled it all apart and found nothing visibly wrong, but I did replace the carrier and gasket and it has been okay. I wan't going to take a chance of only replacing the gasket to find out there was something wrong with the carrier and have to yank it all apart again. Mekanik
I haven't seen oil leak from a 6.0L headgasket, but after reading this thread I guess you can never say never. I would suggest clean oil and 3 bottles of dye that is pre-mixed with a couple quarts of oil. Then all you need is to give the thing a good road test. I have found that just idling sometimes dosen't cut it. I had a oil cooler leak externally, HP oil pump cover, turbo drain o rings, oil leaking from the exaust port at the cylinder head out of the manifold... At least it isn't leaking from the bedplate gasket. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

A tip I've used quite a few times with weak crankcase oil leaks is to pressurize the crankcase with the outlet of a shop vac. Applying 1-2psi to the crankcase while it's idling in the bay really lights up a leak and saves a ton of diag time. Block off the crankcase vent to the left valve cover and stick the hose into the oil fill tube. It works! Good Luck! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/grin.gif
mchan68
I had a oil cooler leak externally... I had one leak A LOT of oil from the front cover area a few months back. This too was an '04 model year 6.0L. This was one of the rare retail 6.0L jobs I had.
