On edit... On occasion, I get "creative" with some of my posts... You Yanks just don't know what you're missin'.

would definitely suspect chip after first set of heads. how wide was spray pattern on pistons. outer perimeter of pattern should not be much out side of hat. are any codes present such as p1000 or communication fault codes.

Ralph... there was a story circulating a couple or three years back about an Alberta 6.0 that went into melt down... It got heads, it got EGR coolers... it got lots of stuff.... but nobody looked down twixt the rad and CAC.... Basics, guys... when you have a repeat failure... basics.

james, possible would wonder if customer would notice cooling fan running on high continuosly and temp needle buried. have run into plugged rads before but customer usually complains of jet engine noise underhood being cooling fan.

Key phrase = "CUSTOMER". Once we get far too many hours into the repair, the customer will say "Oh, yeah.... I didn't think that mattered"... If a customer says "my drivers power window doesn't work" - do you check only that window or all of them?

james, this site is intended for technicians to gain knowledge from others. not to inform them there doing their jobs wrong. I have been in this trade for twenty some years, and probably run into every situation out there. in alberta the use of programmers is wide spread and some techs are turning a blind eye to them. usally if a customer doesnt tell the whole story they are hiding something. also I dont recall seeing arp head bolts in ford procceeder.

Ralph... if a technician is to gain any knowledge, there are times he will need to realize that he has, indeed, been doing something wrong.... For him to realize that, there will come a time where someone will have to mention it.... I've been in this trade for FORTY years... and I can assure you that neither one of has seen everything there is to see... And, if you think different, you are setting yourself up for a big disappointment. Chips in the Alberta oilpatch? You must be kidding.... Maybe you just didn't notice that I also work in the patch... and I see a lot of programmers.... If I can't PROVE that a programmer caused the failure, why would I even open that can of worms???? Now.. the head studs.... If you thijnk those cheesy head bolts are so great, you are welcome to them... Ford procedure? is designed to cover Fords dupa... A retail head job deserves ARPs.... FWIW, Ford "procedure" is to check grounds with an ohm-meter... ain't that a big slice of doing it right?

Of course ford wont acnowledge that arps are better, like they will buy 1000$ set of studs when 30$ bolts will get by.

I have done my fair share of head gaskets, and I can have not had any come back using ford headbolts if customer stays away from chips.

I never professed to be God... but I will admit I have my eyes open.... I am not about to say I know everything like some guys that have been in this trade for nearly twenty years... God forbid that some old dork will try and infuse some sort of logic into your perfect "I've seen everything there is to see" process.... It's not ME professing to be God.... It is you... I have yet to see everything there is to see - you, apparently, have already been there. We have seen repeat head gasket failures.... after the truck is OFF WARRANTY, does it really friggin' matter if the guy has a chip? Don't we want him to have the best truck he can have? RETAIL head gaskets deserve ARPs.... or do we all need to spend out lives acting like wieners?

Whoops... I forgot... retail head jobs deseve ARPs.. chip, no chip, dont matter. There is 'doin' it by the book and there is "doin' it right". A warranty repair puts you in handcuffs... a retail repair let's you deal with the owner.

Aaron, when I read " I have been in this trade for twenty some years, and probably run into every situation out there.", something just snapped... It would be 40 years ago that I enterred this trade... And I would never be so bold as to intimate that I haver probably seen everything there is to see...

I would bet you a thousand bucks he's never seen something along the lines of this:

That is one of the finest 1992 Chevrolet Cavaliers. It's features include, but are not limited to:

Hood Gauges

SEVERAL sets of fuzzy dice

Dukes Of Hazzard Horn

Chrome Torq-Thrust wheels

BIG ASS TACH

Washer jet lights that are wired in to the turn signals

Among other things I can't recall.

Ask him if he's ever seen THAT! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/hahaha.gif

This was an actual vehicle a customer had the small garage I worked at perform the 'performance upgrades' on. When I left the small shop, he was talking about wanting a rollcage installed, as well as considering a 426 Hemi swap.

The dude showing his appreciation in the photo is me, so don't be makin' fun saying it's my car.

Impossible. Most fellers runnin 'round with a rebel flag license plate need some grille-work and I am not talkin about the car.

Nice smile by the way!

Don't laugh too much, I have that same plate on front of my truck. Not because I relate to redneckism even though my neck is slightly red, But because I love the flag along with it's history as well as American history, and it suits my truck. However, it does like brutal on the front of that car.

Well come on boys.... let the old guy know what he's saying....

Just remember.... if a tree fall in the forest and there's nobody there to hear - is Ralph still a wiener?

One day, he will run into a mysterious E-box or similar... and when pressed for the "cure", he might snap "it's fixed - now fuck off"...

Pattern failures always lull us into a sense of complacency... I'm going to add a reply to another thread later that will expand and expound on this a wee bit.... (the latest TSB thread...).... and ol' Ralphee-boy sounds a wee bit complacent...

Back when I was 16.... back then, I knew everything there was to know.... Now? I'm not so sure....

Jeff, we are still waging that civil war but the Anglophones are losing.... Thankfully, our civil war is, currently, bloodless...

However, if we step back in time and check out the Battle of the Plains of Abraham - we find that the French were thoroughly trounced... (Something I have trouble consolidating within myself, however, is that the Church of England didn't have much to do with the aboriginals.... while the Catholic Church and it's French speaking practitioners did... and has been accused of some atrocious allegations).

Fast forward to the 1960s.... and the Front de Liberation du Quebec (and for Gods sake, remember to pronounce it Kebec lest "they" hunt you down like an "infidel dog") - a fargin' home grown terrorist group... blowing stuff up and kidnapping and killing people.... Osama would have been proud.... And the Canadian government - the same Canadian government that brought this freaking cocktail napkin Image:Flag_of_Canada.svg bowed to these terrorists instead of hunting them down like the killers they were...

Perhaps I shouldn't talk politics any more.... some of this idiocy just gets my juices flowing...

I must agree with you Jim. Here's alittle history for those of you who don't know what we are talking about: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Front_de_lib%C3%A9ration_du_Qu%C3%A9bec

Can you beleive that Quebec is still fighting the issue of not allowing margarine into their province that is coloured yellow? /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/icon_crazy.gif
