DwayneGorniak
I just thought I would copy and paste this topic from our Protech site to see what you folks think of it and or maybe have a good laugh. But I took out the innocent names. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk.gif Author Topic: rear diff noises and measuring tools Randy Antonishyn B6019 FOURLANE FORD SALES LTD INNISFAIL , AB posted Jun 18, 2008 2:05PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- How many dealerships have and use the pinion depth measuring tools to set up 9.75" diffs? Are most techs doing it by "feel"? (proper backlash and tooth patterns etc.)The last 3 I've have had marginal success and ended up farting around with changing good backlash and pinion depths to try to get rid of noises. I know there are a couple dealerships in the area that have them but when we ask to borrow them they say they can't find them or say we don't have them. I do a fair amount of diffs and have had success but lately I am having to deal with problem diffs. Asked SM to get them and basically told me that we haven't had them this long why do we need them now? Fr*ck! Looks like a meeting with the DP is needed. B7015 KICKING HORSE FORD SALES GOLDEN , BC posted Jun 18, 2008 3:34PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- i dont have much luck using the pinion depth setting tool. I remeber a post on here 2 or 3 years ago about using this tool and adding or subtracting a certain amount from the measurement. My self i dont trust that, if the tool doent work right. I do it the old fashioned way, by gearwipe. Have never had any problems, just takes longer. Randy Antonishyn B6019 FOURLANE FORD SALES LTD INNISFAIL , AB posted Jun 18, 2008 3:53PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have a hard time with ideal tooth patterns and optimum backlash still results with a gearwhine. Tried a second gear set. Ok for about 5000 km and starting to whine again. I dont know what works anymore. Any other techs have success with pinion depth tools? Seems like the harder I try the worse it gets. I currently have a pumpkin carved open and customer wants 3.73's instead of 3.55's (2wd). Backlash way off the charts and no tooth pattern. Tried to adjust backlash with the shims I have but need bigger/smaller shims. Parts on order! A8009 PERFORMANCE FORD SLS INC WINDSOR , ON posted Jun 18, 2008 6:23PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I've done it both ways and with the tools is easier and faster but now and again you get an odd ball where you have to throw the tools in the box and play it as it falls. If you need the tools your SM should realize that the are "needed" and supply them. Dwayne Gorniak B6019 FOURLANE FORD SALES LTD INNISFAIL , AB posted Jun 18, 2008 6:56PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- At other dealerships I have always had great success with the proper tools. However, here we do not have the so called desired tools that dealerships have absolutely no desire to buy. We always get the saying: we've done it this way for thirty years. Just because things have been this way for thirty years doesn't make right. I personally refuse to do diffs here because we don't have the right tools. When you are in a situation like Randy, it is nice to be able to have a depth guage so that you have a basis to start with. We are taught the right way in school with the right tools. Why should we do it any different in the trade. If Ford wants us to fix things right the first time and guarantee our repairs, they should make these tools mandatory. That way we don't have to pull these things apart two or three times and get paid for only doing it once. Just my two cents. B6264 S.L. FORD SALES LTD. B6032 ZAROWNY MOTORS STPAULLTD ST PAUL , AB posted Jun 19, 2008 9:20AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- just recently i got stuck doing gear swap on an 08 superduty, from 3.73 to 4.88. how fun that was. pinion head size completly different so had to use a different lower bearing and such tried using pinion depth to on that and well i would have to make a non existent shim even thinner. pinion depth tool would hit it self, ended up setting pinion depth and backlash buy putting it in and out without crush sleeve 4 times and checking pattern. eventually got it set kinda alright and sm and foreman said good enough if he wants it better he can do it himself after almost a week doing both front and rear. pinion tool worked good on front didn't even have to change side bearing shims even on the front but 3 days on the rear. B3817 HATHEWAY LIMITED BATHURST , NB posted Jun 19, 2008 11:33AM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Randy- I had the same thing on a 4 units. They were perfect when installed but after 4 or 5000 km they started to howl. It occured after a long trip at higher speeds. The surface of the tooth showed a lot of wear and the backlash went from .008 in to .014 in. On 2 of them I used regular 80w90 gear lube and the concern did not return.ON 2 OF them I used syn lube and I had to replace the gear set again. Dwayne Gorniak B6019 FOURLANE FORD SALES LTD INNISFAIL , AB posted Jul 08, 2008 10:07PM -------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Randy just had fun with another diff. When the Assistant Service Manager asked him if this diff was going to take a while, he totally snapped. Does anyone know the v.a.l.u.e of a really good press verus a c.h.e.a.p $99.00 Princess Auto jobby with a bent frame? Randy Does. LOL. Isn't it funny how d.o.l.l.a.r.s get spent on the images of the front show rooms and all the necessary tools to make the places look up to date? But heaven forbid if a tech asks for a new press or special service tools. We are always asked why we need new tools when things have been done this way for thirty years. Can't you do the the job without it? Welll....can a cashier do their job without Interac? Yes they can, but they may be less efficient. Can a salesman do dealer searches for vehicles with a phone instead of a having a computer to search on line? Yes they can, but they would be less efficient. Can service departments run without computers and use hand written R.O's and paper receipt books? Yes they can, but they would be less efficient and archaic. Would this effect the overall image of a dealership? Yes it would, but technichians are are in the back in the dark where customers don't have to see the overall image. Isn't it funny when you hear those dealership commercials that say they have the latest and greatest in state of the art technology? And alot of it is privately owned in one or more of the technician's toolboxes. Keith Browning
So it's not just an American phenomenon. Ass backward business practices are a global problem - eh? BTW, why did you take Jim's name out? Innocent, yeah! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smirk2.gif
DwayneGorniak
It actually wasn't Jim. It was one of his peers. If it were Jim, I would have left his name in there. We all know he is far from innocent. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif
Jim Warman
The missing name would have likely been Andy... Last Thursday was his last day... "We dun los'anuthah chillun tuh the oil patch". I've seen guys find pinion depth in unspeakable ways even though we have the freakin' tools... I don't spare any effort when I remind them about who wont get paid if they turn up noisey...
