Shlep
Alright guys I'm looking for some insight here before I hang 4 injectors in a 06 6.0, story goes something like this.... I get a call Thursday from a good friend, who has a low mile 06 F250 (33000kms) and has a severe miss, So I head out on the highway Friday night after work to go rescue him, along with another guy to haul the cargo while I haul the hurt 6.0 home. So I scan this thing and p0611 comes up with some other injector codes, I test the output of the FICM and sure enough it's dead on the cyls with the DTC's. Order up a replacement FICM and install it tonight and it fires right up but sounds terrible so I power balance this thing and all 4 cylinders on the left bank are down on power. I shut it down and scratch the ole head a bit and think what did I over look. So not being afraid of a little discovery I tear into this thing and wasn't really expecting to find what I did.... I have all 4 injectors with the tops broken off the main bodies. Now here's the question... what caused these injectors to break the torx bolts off? The only thing that I can figure is that once the FICM failed the oil pressure had no way to release and just kept building inside until it finally reached the breaking point of the retainers. Open to other ideas here because the truck has no warranty( salvaged title) and I really don't want to just throw parts at it.
Jim Warman
The ICP can't build any higher than the system is going to command... I really can't see the high pressure oil system as a cause for the concern.... Base fuel pressure, OTOH.... I'd be checking base fuel pressure at each cylinder head... Low base fuel pressure will allow these injectors to hammer themselves to pieces... With four injectors with broken tops, it is possible that some coils were shorted and this may have given the appearance that the FICM was faulty... after the injectors have been replaced, I'd try with the old FICM again, just to be sure To find our more about the FICM, go to Power Stroke Central and, on the left side, click "Diesel Repair Aids" - In the 6.0 list, you see the 6.0 FICM Guide... I highly recommend reading this publication.
Shlep
I retested the old FICM on another truck and it still failed giving me the same codes, as far as the fuel pressure goes thatsthe next thing that was one my list but I didn't have my gauge with me at the time. I'll be heading over after work to look at the truck some more so I'll post the findings as I go.
Tony302600
Low fuel pressure causes the injector's to beat themselves.....they correct fuel pressure act's as a cushion.
eastendpowerstroke
Check the filters, one of my fleets got a load of shit fuel and had three trucks blow the injectors apart just like that. 2 LCF's and a F-450. When I took the hfcm filter out it looked like it was 10 years old and cloged solid. But it only had about 4k miles on the filters.
Aaron
I'm not trying to steal any of Shlep's thunder - but they are broke at the red line in this picture: (that's an injector from a different customer's sicko - missing the nut off the through bolt) I'm kinda new at the 6.0 world - but THAT'S where they bust when there's no fuel pressure? The whole top is gone off the injector! He showed me a picture this morning at work. (we work in adjacent bays, and always look for good laughs first thing in the AM) I've seen several injector failures from no fuel pressure, but not like that. I was just curious. I never made it to look at that truck tonight but I did just change the filters before he left, but thanks for the tip as you never know what he may have got at one of those road side fuel stops. Mekanik
We had a truck with several injectors like that a while ago at my old shop. It was a FQR engine that was installed at another dealer. The other tech just replaced the injectors, tested fuel pressure and moved on to the next problem vehicle. We never did find out why it happened. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/shrug.gif
GregKneupper
I was told by an fse one time that this was caused by lack of oil changes and extended idle time. Do not now how true that was and dont have any evidence to prove it.
Shlep
Looks like the winner here was eastendpowerstroke, nailed it with the bad fuel. I have no idea whats in that tank but it ain't diesel fuel thats for sure, it kinda looks like gas and smells like turpintine..... /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/scratchhead.gif

dieseldoc
Jim is it possible to get a link to the article on the 6.0 ficm. Or is power stroke central only accessible by dealer techs?
