oil samples are wonderful things. I take oil samples at every oil change( I work for a cat dealer and get a great deal on them). Samples also work the best to track trends when they are consistently taken. I get my results the next day it seems. I noticed that I had a high silicon content on my 06' the first three oil changes(caused when engine is apart for repair, or dirt ingestion. My engine had not been opened up yet so I check all my intake clamps and the one at the turbo inlet was loose. Tightened the clamp and checked all the others and the silicon content went down to normal/acceptable levels. Oil sampling saved me an engine. I am a very big believer in oil sampling and and coolant sampling as well.

Ditto, ditto, ditto. We did a PPI on a Blazer one time and the oil sample came back with high silicon. It had a cracked intake bellows......

BIG believer here.

Now I will NEVER know what happened! They towed the truck out of here today. I am so sad! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif I do want to know happened though. I still have my oil samples and I just ordered the NAPA test kit... what the heck!

They towed it where? If a Ford rep did not deny the warranty, then it can simply go to another dealer. Keep the VIN and check it a month from now. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif

Sample went out today using the NAPA kit. Bruce, how does this company provide my report, by mail/on-line? I could not provide the brand of oil or an accurate mileage interval on the oil itself. I hope that does not mean they wont test it. I provided the mileage and the engine hours though.

By mail, unless you request fax or other. The time varies widely, as soon as 7-8 days, or as long as 2-3 weeks, depending on their work load, I guess. I just sent in a diff oil sample to diag a noise and it took over two weeks which is unusual. I also mailed another sample yesterday, so we'll see how long it takes.

They don't care about weight or other, but type of oil is important (engine, trans, diff, etc). I have also sent in diesel fuel samples and they will give about 7 things such as gravity, cetane, cloud point, pour point, distillation, but not lubricity. I have not found an inexpensive lubricity test yet.

You'll like the oil analysis as it gives 26 items plus explanations and an 800 number to call if you have any questions. When I've called the 800 number, a person answers who actually knows what they are talking about. What a surprise!

Good Luck!

  • 3 weeks later...

I got the oil analysis report today so I scanned it and PDF'd it for you to read. The highlights are that it reports CRITICAL levels of iron, aluminum, sodium, potassium, water and coolant. The ABNORMAL levels were for silicon and soot. No surprise there.

Knowing the condition of the engine the Analysis Recommendations are kinda funny but the lab has no idea the engine was destroyed.

I have not heard any news about this truck since it was towed away.

I suddenly remembered an incident from many years ago.... Let's flashback to the late 70s and my marvelous R700 Mack (I was going to turn the hood ornament around at one point and let him look at the asshole for a while.... and old Mack joke)...

A freind with a Cummins... NTC 350 or 400, IIRC sent an oil sample in to R Angus.... A big Caterpillar dealer "back in the day".... Analysis came back that his brake saver was screwed..... I am reasonably sure that they were aware that this oil sample was out of a Cummins.

I'd bet an EGR cooler failure.

I sent one in on Aug 5 and got the results on the 23rd. They seem like they're running a bit slow this time of year?

Anyway, the results were not what I wanted- bearing material in the oil. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/frown.gif
