Stuck 6.0L Turbo

I know somebody is going to jump all over me, but this IS only the second turbo that I have had to replace for sticking issues. Anyway, I decided to take the turbine housing off and see for myself just what makes these things stick. I did not see what I expected. No carbon or evidence of coking, it was actually clean! So clean and so little carbon in fact that this turbo had actually rusted. I found a light coating of surface rust on the case and unison ring. The cam pin and plunger were moving freely. My assumption is that this vehicle has been sitting.

Yeah, I noticed the same thing... also finding if they stick and overboost, some are blowing the CAC cooler seems apart so when your done the turbo you then have little or no bosst and a lack of power.

Though not the same failure, of the turbos I have replaced have seized or bent the shafts. What I mean is that I guess the bearings and the shafts get so hot that the turbine wheel actually start to separate and wobble until it either completely comes off and ends up down the pipe or ends up jammed against the housing.

I replaced one today that looked like it was bent. The compressor and turbine wheels were bent downward in the same direction. The fun part is blowing out the three quarts of oil in the exhaust! HooHoo! I thought the Fire department was going to show up.

I know! I've done the "great american smokeout" in the shop much to the ire of my fellow gasser techs.

I'm beginning to RR more turbos due to shaft runout issues that manifest as interference with the housing, although vgt vanes stuck seem to be recurrent.
