Jwebb1981
I have a 03 f550 6.0 in the stall. Brought in for lack of power found that the ep is only at 14 psi inspected under the hood and found what looks to be black sult from the exhaust system all over the left fender and hood area. I was wondering if anyone else had run across this? Or if someone could give me adivse. I am new to the 6.0 just got out of training for these "works of art" /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif thanks jwebb
Torqued_Up
You would have to be new to not know this and it's not the best news I am afraid. The Y-pipe that goes from both exhaust manifolds to the turbo is probably cracked and leaking. This is very common and I would bet that's your leak. Done many myself and the rest of the guys probably have too.
Jwebb1981
Yeah I am new to this I just won't say how new. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif I need any tips or tricks that you can give on getting the back bolt off the turbo charger. thanks
Jim Warman
Oooooo, this bolt can be a booger... Hopefully, you haven't rounded the corners. I use the best socket in my box (I've learned to keep one or two "fresh" 10mms on hand) and make sure I have a good grip on the bolt. I've had pretty good luck with my butterfly wrench but you need to try that before the corners are damaged. Worse case scenario has us split the turbo... after you get the front half out, the back half will wiggle out along with the pedestal. Jwebb1981
Thanks for the help guys. No one in the shop works on diesel so it's just me on my own and like i say ealier I am new to all this. I have having troubles geting the Y-pipe discounted from the LH exhaust manifold. That bolt on the upper side of the pipe is giving me a hard time. Also any other advice I sure need it. I may also want to add that I ma doing this on the ground. Yes, you heard me right. We do not anything that can pick this truck up. Maybe after this my service manager will look into this for me. Thanks guys
Keith Browning
Jim makes a good point here about the "fresh" sockets and this is especially true about 10mm bolts AND nuts on the 6.0L and the 7.3L. Even a slightly worn socket can lead to rounded fasteners /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/banghead.gif and it happens frequently so expect it and be prepared! The one's to really look out for: 7.3L cam sensor bolt (my favorite) Turbo and exhaust bolts - all PSD engines All 10mm nuts used on EVERYTHING mounted to the valve cover studs - all PSD engines I also recommend, if you don't already own a set, Bolt Out or Stripped Bolt remover sockets CLICK HERE for an example. I regularly use the 10mm and it save time and your sanity when you round one of the suckers off! There is also a nice SK set of "Turbo Sockets" on the Rotunda Technician Tool Program web site accessible through FMC. Dealer.com but it's a larger set and of course, quite a bit more money. The Craftsman set has served me well and is about a third of the cost of most other brands/sets.
