Bruce Amacker
Anybody take ASE's??? Well they just came out with a new one for us diesel tech's. http://www.ase.com/Template.cfm?Section=...tentDisplay.cfm Damon and I (and 15 other industry people) sat in ASE workshops two weeks last year writing the test questions for the A9 test and believe me, it ain't gonna be a picnic to pass it. Lucky the A9 isn't needed for CMAT or CMTT. I have my CMAT, CMTT, L1 and L2. Damon has so many ASE's I can't even count, maybe 50? Maybe 4 or 5 Masters? Some people just don't know when to quit..... Damon
All the HEUI questions are yours, though....
Mekanik
Is this going to be harder than L2? If I have L1, L2, Auto/ diesel master cert, is this one really neccesary ?
Bruce Amacker
Is this going to be harder than L2? It's going to be different than L2. The challenge with this test is that it covers everything under 14K GVW. This means there's questions on Powerstroke HEUI, Common Rail, Cummins, Duramax, Isuzu, Hino, BMW, VW, MB, and every other manufacturer under the sun selling diesels in the USA. We did eliminate PLN systems from the task list like the old 7.3 IDI, but we did leave PLN-E systems in the list, like Isuzu electronic pump and GM 6.5. The questions are not generic and easy, they are sometimes manufacturer specific although the mfr won't be listed. This means you have to be very familiar with ALL of these systems, which I am not, nor is almost anyone I know. I know common rail quite well, but there are CR questions regarding Cummins and Duramax that I know I'd miss (if it were not for participating in the workshops). There are Euro questions that I don't even understand, much less know the answer to, because there are systems on Euro diesels that US guys have never seen. The good thing is that I bet they will grade on a curve until they get the bugs worked out of the test. Expect a lot of questions, too, because they will disregard a lot of questions after analyzing the answers. If I have L1, L2, Auto/ diesel master cert, is this one really necessary ? Necessary? None are really necessary. If you work on all makes, it won't be tough, but the problem is very few techs work on all makes. Brush up on DPF theory and application, 'cause there's questions on those, too. I'll take the test for S&G. It's too bad Damon and I couldn't sit in the same room while we're taking the A9, because I'm sure we'd be cracking up over what questions made the cut and who wrote them. Damon, do you care to elaborate?
Damon
Sure. Having helped write the L2 twice, I can say for sure it's a totally different kind of test. It's like the L2, but for much lighter trucks (and diesel cars) whereas the L2 is a midrange/heavy test. Also, unlike the L2, it lacks a composite, which means many more systems are discussed, where the L1/L2 largely cover the composite vehicle, as you've said above. I'd say take it once, you'll realize there's a whole other world you may not be aware of. The best part about the ASE tests isn't whether you pass or fail, or the cute little thing you get for your wallet or wall, but the SCORECARD which helps show you the areas you're not so strong in. It should be worth taking for this reason alone.
LARRY BRUDZYNSKI
I think Keith should put the test up on the site. It could be a good learning tool.
Bruce Amacker
Keith would be behind bars very quickly if he did that, as would his source for the test. I'll clue you in- the source won't be me.....
LARRY BRUDZYNSKI
Sorry for insinuating that you would do anything wrong. I didn't mean for you to take it that way. Keith has added the tests that are interesting and make you think. I just thought it might be something else we could use here.
Bruce Amacker
Don't worry, Larry, no offense taken. ASE has very strict rules regarding those tests (no surprise) and we all sign documents stating we will not disclose any test questions outside of the writing workshop. I'd never repeat questions we have written, nor do I have them on file in any format. On the other hand, I hear Damon can be bought for a reasonable fee....... Damon
I may be easy, but not I'm not cheap. But....I keep no records of questions written, and can't even remember what I had for breakfast.
