Damon
I've seen this happen with aftermarket ones, but this is a reboxed OE design. Has anyone found a cause?
Shlep
Last one I had like that had 20 000kms(13000 miles)over the next oil change interval, and it was an OEM filter.
Keith Browning
I think I have only seen this a couple of times. Don't recall any details though.
Damon
This one had only 4k on the oil, IN fact it's as clean as you could expect to see. This truck's NOT neglected, it's overmaintained. That's what bothered me, this is MY filter, and I don't like when my parts let go. I checked those patent numbers and they're all to Hengst and Parker Hannifin. The filter is a Donaldson, and the OE is Hengst, right? That makes this an OE filter. I've never seen one of mine fail yet, always the Brand X ones. LARRY BRUDZYNSKI
Only seen 1, customer "Did his own PM's" even had receipts from buying the filters, all three of the oil filters were behind the seat never used. It had the original filter from the factory still in it, but it came out in little pieces. Priceless!!!! Had another one this week but it was a fuel filter, 6.0 with 89K miles on it with the original pieces of filter, he wondered why it ran like shit. Aaron
My Factory Fit filter on my 6.4 did that, as well as several customer vehicles, with varying amounts of mileage, be it under, around, or much later than the reccomended interval. I had a truck with 23,000KM on it with a factory fit filter in it, and the top stayed on it. Seems like maybe some get a little more glue than others? Hard to say. exmod110
20000km -25 and 15w40 last one I found!!
GregH
Yep, seen this a few times... I wonder what the melting point of that glue is.... And what the EOT/ECT deviation is....
Damon
Actually, researching the patent numbers, I learned something. They're not glued, the filter's endplates are thermally bonded without an added bonding agent. In other words, the end plates ARE the glue, no added goo goes in there. You can actually see that in the pic, there's nothing but element and plate.
slim
There is always a certain amount of failure with anything. If they make a thousand filters and only one fails they're doing a damn good job. Probably just one of those failures and not anything to worry about.
OHNO60
Maybe theres an underlying issue, like the engine oil cooler failing and overtemping the oil????
