Keith Browning
This week's adventure was a 2 for 1 special. It's a 2008 F550 that runs rough and smokes and misses when cold - intermittently after warm up. Originally diagnosed as injectors because the symptom was erratic and initial base engine checks showed nothing relative compression was almost perfect, cylinder #2 only showed a meager 2% drop which one might attribute to a washed cylider... yeah, I know. Later after injectors 2 and 8 were replaced and the condition did not improve I had to retest from the start. Running relative compression HOT showed cylinder #2 now down 14% if I recall and #8 down 9%. I followed with a manual compression test and #2 was 350 PSI and #8 was 375 PSI and the remaining cylinders around 425 PSI. Off with the cab and the head. Cylinder #2 had a wrist pin retainer problem Cylinder #8 has some unexplained scoring going on The crankcase oil level was not elevated. Well, not beyond the typical 2 or 3 quarts anyway and there was no oil in the charge air cooler and CAC tubes. The EGR coolers were dry as well. I really don't know what to think about #8. Mikill
Is the piston starting to melt down? I have seen a couple of those.
joe_r
bad fuel causing constant regen?
DieselD
nice. Ive been seeing more and more base engine failures on these things. it takes a bit more to kill a 6.0. seems you have an injector take a dump on these 6.4s it kills the motor. Ive had 2 or 3 vehicles that run constantly and not getting hour vs miles oil changes thus filling the crankcase and cac so full of oil it overfuels and burns a hole. Aaron
We had a hotline engineer ask is how deep the scratching was, wanted to know if we could hone it. #2 piston EXPLODED. Yeah, we'll hone that fucker right out.
Keith Browning
Believe it or not, short block and an oil cooler along with two injectors and all gaskets/bolts/etc BLEW the cost cap once labor was added in. These things are not cheap to fix!!! Got a DOES II engine coming which is cool but sucks at the same time. I spent time stripping this engine and pulling it apart only to have to put it together and only get paid, what is it, 1.8 or 2.3 to determine engine condition? I don't remember the time but I just know I am taking it in the cheeks on this one. AGAIN!
BrunoWilimek
I spent time stripping this engine and pulling it apart only to have to put it together and only get paid, what is it, 1.8 or 2.3 to determine engine condition? I don't remember the time but I just know I am taking it in the cheeks on this one. AGAIN! So is one of our techs here(Chris Brady). He had a 6.0 in a cube van that was hydrolocked at high speed (the company owner told the driver to keep driving it after it started blowing white smoke out the tailpipe, if I remember correctly)due to a failed EGR cooler. Hotine told Chris just to put a cooler in it as the engine "should be OK". The engine was running a bit rough on initial startup, so Chris stepped on the accelerator to clear it. The next thing I knew, Chris was running across the shop yelling "RUNAWAY" as the engine revved up with the key out of the ignition. Luckily it didn't run very long or rev very high. After draining the oil and many liters of diesel fuel out of the oil pan and removing the oil pan, Chris found part of one of the pistons, which had a hole blown in it, in the pan. The cylinder was scored as well. He is still finishing it up today, but warranty only will pay up until about half the time he was on it yesterday and none of today. BrunoWilimek
It actually was a reman long block. It came up from Missouri or somewhere in the south, I think.
Aaron
Yah, and the first thing you have to do on a fresh motor in a van is crack the oil pan off. NIIIICE....LOL
BrunoWilimek
Yah, and the first thing you have to do on a fresh motor in a van is crack the oil pan off. NIIIICE....LOL Actually, Chris was able to leave the oil pan on it. He had to remove the tranny cooler lines, then tip the engine one way and pry-very gently and in it went with no damage to the oil pan. Gary_P
had one, well...still in the shop... with a melted #1 piston, bent #3 rod at least a gallon of engine oil in the CAC. DPF/DOC melted, just the engine repair alone with 3 injectors was over cost cap and hotlines reply was...........let me cut and paste.......... Based on the information provided, this repair will be under the cost cap with the short block, cylinder head and related components. There is no approval needed for repairs that do no exceed the cost cap. Please perform the repairs. it only exceeded it by about $2,000 WTF??!!
