BLittle500
Plopping a #5 injector in a truck and I cant get the damned oil rail off of this thing. The two lower back bolts are rounding out and I cant get squat in there. Any tips guys? Thanks again, Brandon
BrunoWilimek
I've never had to do it, but I understand from reading old posts that the A/C plenum is fairly simple to remove. Once it's out of the way you will have more room to get at those stubborn bolts. Good luck.
BLittle500
Thats what I ended up doing. Turns out our old diesel guy had put oil rails on this truck before. I thought they looked rounded out before I started, but didnt pay any attention. Perhaps things like that are the reason he's the "old tech". Thanks for the info, Brandon
Jim Warman
Some time ago, I passed a remark or two about using air tools for assembly work... If some guy is the "old tech" and you are the "new tech"..... you have a 50-50 chance of becoming the old tech. Rounded over fasteners "happen". They happen because the torque specs in the manual are high to begin with... they happen because sockets wear out.. they happen because some youngster in a big rush uses an air wrench with a worn out socket to assemble shit... What might be a big surprise for some is that lefty loosey/righty tighty works.... the guy tryng to take something out is at the mercy of someone from a LONG time ago. And it isn't necessarily the last guy that worked on it.... Some time ago, someone asked me "what kind of animal could do <this>...?". A quick review of the service history netted an answer of "you". I've dealt with my fair share of fucked fasteners... caused a few, too.... These are the things we deal with on a daily basis. This makes us "mechanic".... Diagnosing things.... in a timely manner.... concisely.... correctly..... this allows us to add the adverb "good".... Every day we are given the opportunity to look like assholes.... mchan68
This reminds me of an '03 truck I had in the shop awhile back to change an injector or two. Nearly all of the 8mm bolts were completely rounded off. A quick look at the OASIS Warranty Claims History revealed that this particular truck had been to SEVERAL (at least four) other dealers for multiple injector replacements, before it landed in my hands. Mekanik
Does anyone in your shop have turbo sockets? AKA twist sockets. I bet they would take those bolts off. They have saved my ass several times.
DamageINC
The problem is getting a turbo socket pounded over the oil rail bolt, the #5 injector isn't gonna leave much room for ANYTHING, much less a socket and room to swing a small hammer. You may have to remove the evaporator case, it's not a bad job at all. It just sucks that you'll have to do what would normally be 'unnecessary' work to perform the repair. Keith Browning
Right. And you are going to want to make a seperate time punch specifically for this operation and claim M-Time, fully documenting what you are doing and why.
robp823
This happens especially since its a 6.0 and god knows how many times the oil rail has been off.Way more than IH or Ford ever planned.Happy Easter!
Jim Warman
I think too many people are using air tools to assemble things... but I'm an ass that believes good should come before fast...
DamageINC
I think too many people are using air tools to assemble things... but I'm an ass that believes good should come before fast... Exactly. That's why I torque them with my 1/2" electric impact. DAve

sixturbosix
If it is one you can get an air hammer to the tops pop off real easy then remove the rail and the remaining stud screws out easily.
