BLittle500 Posted April 28, 2009 Share Posted April 28, 2009 Hey guys, Have a cust that has a truck that smokes like a bitch, but he's not complaining of that. Somewhere under the hood there is exhaust leaking, and its that bad that exhaust is coming out of the heater vents. I cant pinpoint the leak, and I have already dropped the down pipe, re-torqued the up pipe clamps and the down pipe clamp. Anyone run into anything like this before? But just order a Y-pipe, so you can fix it Thursday. It's broken at the flex joint If you look at the shinny foil covered insulation on the firewall you'll find it ain't so shinny any more and is black. the truck probably makes you eyes bleed when it idling huh? .. It looked like the smoke started pouring from the Y-pipe, but I though, naaaaaaa cant be. I'm going to pull the turbo tomorrow and get that Y pipe off of there and check it out. I'm off thursday and friday, and there is no other diesel tech's in our shop so the guy isnt expecting it until some time next week anyway. Thanks for the info! Scary thought - I am finishing up my third right side turbo feed tube on a 6.4L. The flex joint on them fail just like the 6.0L. Hoorayyyy! eastendpowerstroke Posted April 29, 2009 Share Posted April 29, 2009 Pull the turbo if you like but I prefer to pull the trans rather than the turbo. it sounds like a lot of work, but with the trans out your standing upright not hanging over the motor or strugling reaching down to get to the flanges working blind, you can access the drivers side flange at the manifold and the joint just above the EGR cooler from under the back of the motor. Brad Clayton Posted May 5, 2009 Share Posted May 5, 2009 Just did one today and took your advice. I have pulled so many 5r110w's (due to the pair of recalls in the past) that it was breeze. eastendpowerstroke Posted May 6, 2009 Share Posted May 6, 2009 Yeah with the trans out it's almost as easy as doing a Ypipe on a E-van. In a perfect world just pulling the turbo would certainly be faster, but rarely is it perfect. All it takes is on bolt to give you a hard time and spending the hour or so to yank the trans pays off BIG TIME! this is assuming that your shop has a trans jack capable of holding the trans and transfer case in one peice.
