Stalling 7.3L with P0231

I'm working on a 2000 F350 that stalls intermittently. Usually after idling a long time and they say it is worse when raining. I have not been able to verify it and the only DTC it has is a P0231, which is for fuel pump circuit.

Now, you can actually unplug a 7.3L fuel pump and it will lack power and smoke, but actually run pretty good(as long as the pump is not locked-up and fuel can flow through it). I have a hard time believing that a open fuel pump will cause this. Also they say that the thing fires up after it stalls.

Any ideas???

Heat under the hood may be part of the cause, so both of these conditions point towards an electrical or harness problem. I had a Crown Vic a while ago that would stall after idling for an hour, only with the hood down. It would run all day with the hood up. It ended up being a crappy connector in the FP relay circuit.

Check the harness under the master cylinder for rub-through on the brake line. I remember one very similar to this where the harness was rubbed there. (IIRC, the FP relay is buried in the dash by the driver's knee and radio.)

Yep.

I'd run a long 1/8" nylon line to a FP gauge inside the truck and let them drive it around a while with it. I agree, it may or may not be FP related, but it doesn't take long to hook it up.

What color is the CMP? Swap a good one in for S&G. Did you drain the FF into a bottle and check for contamination? How's the general appearance of batteries, cables, and etc? Maybe hose it down while it's idling to see what happens?

It has a grey CMP(but that dosen't mean that it is good). I will check the wiring for chafing like you said. I didn't check for fuel contamination yet.

Thanks and I'll keep you updated.

Nothing. I let it idle, drove it, ect... Could not get the problem to happen. I gave it a good wiggle test and checked the wiring under the master.

Any other ideas?
