Choosing a camera....

So... some kind soul was seeking gainful empoloyment one evening and discovered an employment opportunity. Some hapless idjit left the door to his pick up unlocked and became poorer by one digital camera... No great loss as it was a little long in the tooth, boasting a whopping 1.something MP and delivering the worlds worst low light pics - getting ready for replacement, anyway (one might say).

Kodak Z1485IS is near the top of my short list... Anyone else have suggestions/recommendations/experience...

Just so you guys can get a real giggle, I am doing a course for our local fire service this fall... and all my stuff was on the camera card.... Posted Image

Sounds like a mercy killing to me, seeing the pictures it took....Posted Image

Is that Kodak 14MP? Holy shit, Batman! That's way more MP than you need, but that's the way things are going these days. Most cameras do a good job these days, and I still use an old Olympus pocket D-550 3mp for 95% of my shooting that takes better pictures than 4-5 newer, bigger cameras that I have.

Buy your camera from somewhere that has a 14-30 day return policy and run the shit out of it shooting stupid stuff during that time. I recently bought an Olympus FE370 8mp pocket camera that seemed to take a good picture until I took it on a big vacation and found out that it didn't take quite as great of a shot as I thought. Good Luck!

Thanx, Bruce... I do recall the.... errrrr comments you made about my productions... they do almost resemble daguerrotypes, yes?

Lookimg at cameras today, MP seems to be the big hiccup they are all bragging... I don't plan on doing any billboards so I realize anything over about 5 MP is wasted... but I'd like something with good low light performance and also with a fast shutter for action stuff...

I had considered an SLR but I just can't justify one - add that there are times this has to go in a saddle bag.

Thanks for the advice....

I too am curious as to what other members are using and what they like about their cameras.

I have been using an older 1.3MP Sony DSC-50 for this web site which has been doing a decent job, I also inherited my fathers 3.3MP Olympus C-3040 which has a greater resolution but is not as easy to use because of the settings.

I have been considering a new camera but I can't justify it right now because I have been thinking about the SLR ones but the cost is a little much... and like you Jim, do I really need it? I have been noticing all of the smaller sized $100-$200 cameras that many of the women in my life have been toting around and sharing pictures in emails. The pictures are really good.

I would almost want to suggest asking friends and family what they are using and possibly asking to borrow them for a couple of days to try different cameras...

I just recently picked one up on sale at Best Buy. I got a Cannon Powershot A590... Lots of nice features, a pretty good streamline mode, nice video capability, and accomodates a 2GB card - enough for our last vacation in the Smoky Mountains.

In this picture, my little one is backlit by a relatively low sun, and i did not use a fill flash to illuminate her - I was standing on some light colored gravel, and that reflected enough light into the picture. This was from some distance away and zoomed in 4X optically. The image quality was degraded from resizing down to 600x800. Original size is 2448x3264 and about 2MB.

Never mind the chocolate on her shirt...

I would recommend playing with several at the store, then go home and read reviews of the ones you liked on amazon.com to see what other people think.

Welllllll... someones loving bride came home with a Canon SD1200 - they come in designer colours, doncha know...

I'm waiting for the battery pack to charge as I write this... yes.... I said battery pack. Even my old dinosaur accepted AA cellsI have my doubts about this one already - and I haven't even pointed the camera at anything yet.

On a plus note, the camera is smaller than two that I had on my short list.

90 day return policy is in affect/
