Aaron
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Civic_Holiday Another paid summer day off for us Canucks. Let's raise a Blue. That's good stuff. Have a happy holiday fellows!
Jeff Adema
Gotta love that one line in there: "not generally observed in these locales except by federal employees". Ahh sweet gubment jobs. Just came back from a hot and hazy extra-long weekend over the mountains in Invermere BC. There's nothing like ice cold Pil and Big Rock Honey Brown to quench your thirst when it's 30 plus degrees (that's metric for hot) and forest-fire smoke fills your lungs. But hot DAMN the lake was hopping! Boats that make mine look like ancient crap adorned with all kinds of bikini clad jewellery. My blood pressure still hasn't gone down...... Brad Clayton
Quote: it's 30 plus degrees (that's metric for hot) I was working with one of my Aussie companions at the ski resort, and we were comparing our summers. I said it doesn't get to hot around here, but down South it reaches well over a 100 degrees on a regular basis. He just looked at me and said what's that. I guess I should have said 40 degrees centigrade. Seems weird to think about 100 degrees fahrenheit and not know that that is damn hot! Jeff Adema
I'm pretty sure you guys are the only ones still clinging to that system, B-rad. The rest of the world has jumped on the metric bandwagon. Funny, though, that around here all the roads are spaced out one mile apart, and farmland is measured in acres, I measure my fat ass in pounds and feet/inches, but we gotta preach the metric gospel 'cuz that's the rule from up top. I guess after all you're not the only ones clinging to that system......
LARRY BRUDZYNSKI
Metric is actually a easy concept. I had a hard childhood growing up being that my mum was Canadian and my father was U.S. I got educated from my mum on metric and had to live with standard measure here. It's unfortunate that more U.S. citizens don't adopt the metric system. I still look at my Blue and see 12 fl oz. and also see 355ml on the labels. I'm sure Aaron or Jim will ring in here on this subject. My work deals mainly with inches and feet in measure of length and torque specs. I really think we need to get up to speed being that the market we deal with is primarily using the metric systems. As for the "holiday" that you Canudian's enjoy, we have some that you don't, and you have some that we don't. That's just life. I'm sure that our neighbors to the south of the border do the same. We just see it more with the north because we deal with each other more than the south. The way I see it...If you can get it, then just enjoy it. Brad Clayton
I don't feel so bad when it comes to english/metric, especially when NASA can't get it right. I mean after all they are "rocket scientists" clicky---> WTF
LARRY BRUDZYNSKI
So who's fault was it???? Sounds to me like the right hand didn't know what the left was doing......
Brad Clayton
Well at least it didn't cost us tax payers too much......<makes rasberry sounds>
cbriggs
Ok, heres a funny metric to imperial conversion story. I subbmited a prior approval form for head gaskets on a 6.0, after completing all tsb tests, result was leaking head gaskets. filled out fields in form, and the eot vs ect diff was max 5`c @ 100`c operating temp. Here is hotlines response: "Chris, based on the results from ect vs eot being 5c when converted to Farenhieht (41f) it exceeds the min spec of 15 degrees for the ect vs eot split. The oil cooler heat exchanger will need to be replaced prior to suspecting the head gaskets for this concern. The oil cooler kit does not require prior approval. A restricted oil cooler can create the same results as faulty had gaskets. Once the oil cooler kit has been installed re-test for normal operation. If found that the head gaskets require replacement update the forms." I quoted this word for word, spelling mistakes and all. After i read this I was mad as hell. Who are these douche bags aproving us to repair this shit? I sent back the form, and was very rude, including a correct conversion to farenhiet for them. I guess i should have hung the cooler and then re submitted for approval on gaskets. And then i had to resubmitt for a turbo as well, as one of the 3 small screws had a fight with the turbine wheel at some point in the past, and the wheel lost. So that was 3 prior approval forms for this job, for a wopping .3. Fuk me.
cbriggs
HaHa, just noticed reading it that the spec is now 15` min, according to this guy. What a turd.
Brad Clayton
Quote: as one of the 3 small screws had a fight with the turbine wheel at some point This one backed out and would not allow the compressor to turn at all. Don't even ask me how long it took me to figure out his low power complaint.
Jim Warman
Aaron, I think Alberta is a leader when it comes to paid holidays... Between federal stat holidays and the province, we get one day nearly every month. Very few of them are limited to public employees (though they do get pampered - BECAUSE OF UNION AFFILIATIONS!!!). CUPW and CUPE are poxes on the country and rob their members of initiative and pride. Larry, like I mentioned in another thread... what can be easier than metric? I was born and raised in an imperial measure world - yet I seem to have a better grasp of metric than many young 'uns... young 'uns that will say something is four inches long but can't hold their fingers one inch apart (go figure). Add that the 12oz notation on the can is for nothing more than some misbegotten popular demand... but my standard line about "getting this body by lifting weights - 12 ounces at a time" works so much better with that notation. Brad... back in 1983 an incident driven by metric conversion happen in the skies over Canada. Instead of basing their measurements on one system or the other, the refuelling crew used conversion formulas to compute the fuel required by an Air Canada flight. A TV movie of the event was made and aird in the last few years. I am an avid woodworker and I have learned several very real truths in the pursuit. Use only one tape measure for any project (a story stick is better - google the idea). Two identical tape measures can harbour discrepancies. Do NOT convert from one system to another - if you are working in inches - work in inches- shit or get off the pot. Even the best algorithm is fraught with generalizations and subject to mistakes in arithmetic. At any given time. I might look at something and consider that it looks like about an inch... or maybe 25 and a half mms.... give or take. Unfortunately, there is over a 1/16th inch difference between a meter and 40 inches.
