very poor fuel mileage

Anyone got any ideas for fuel mileage concern on an 03 F350?...

I installed 3 much need injectors on this truck last week, runs like a scalded dog now,but customer went to Florida and says he was averaging only 5 mpg.Not a happy camper,he makes the same run to Florida 3 times or more a month transporting boats...he keeps up with the fuel mileage,he also maintains his truck very well. The truck has 156,000 miles. Thanks for any help or advise... I'm assuming it has the 06E17, which has its share of MPG complaints. I'd do a basic performance analysis looking hard at the VGT and FP check, and I'd be looking for a restricted cat. Maybe monitor EBP_G (I think it still works, even with the flash) or backprobe the EBP physically (I know it's still powered up, just ignored), or put a physical gauge in the pipe in a tapped hole forward of the cat.

You can flash it to an older level to eliminate the 06E17, but it's a HUGE time wasting PIA and probably not legal, either.

IMHO, most economy complaints are driver related. Go for a cruise with the IDS "econometer" open and see what it reads. If the bonehead pulls a bigass heavy boat going 75MPH, he's gonna get 5MPG.

Good Luck!

OK do tell? I'd love to have the original split shot flash back in my truck,it was nice and quiet.

FWIW my F350 gets 15-19 mpg towing the mustang on the car trailer approx 4400 lbs at 70+ mph.

"I'm told" but I have not done this myself:

>Uninstall the current WDS (what's that, right?) version from the WDS

>Locate an old WDS disc from the pre-06E17 days

>Load this onto the WDS

>Program the PCM using as-built data, because it won't recognize the installed calibration

>Then update the program using the WDS

There's a lot of programming gurus on this forum, and I'm sure there are some holes in this info, which is a couple of years old. Let me know if this is possible.

Good Luck!

OK,I've been all over this truck trying to find cause and even pulled the injectors I replaced out again to inspect, all looks good.Customer says he gets 14-17 mpg,and I believe him...says after repair was done he now has it calculated to 5 mpg, showed me receipts of all the fuel stops he made from florida to SC,$420.00 worth.WOW...I did reprogram the FICM,surely that didn't cause this, but who knows?

Putting it back together, then I plan to run a fuel economy test, since it's available...thanks for all the input guys, this has got me Posted Image

FWIW In my personal 06' F-250 4X4 6spd with 3.73 gears, the worst I have ever gotten is 10mpg towing. That day was a 15mph wind and I was loaded at a GVW of about 21000lbs. I was runnning 68mph. Now granted in the lovely state of ND we dont have many hills or mountains where I was headed but still. In my opinion that heavy that fast and still got 10 MPG is pretty good.

I get 14-18mpg empty and towing a 32ft 5th wheel that tips the scales at or about 10,000lbs loaded I average about 11-12 travelling 60-70mph on a recent vacation to Niagara Falls with an 06 350 crewcab dually w/4:10s so depending on his driving style and the weight of the boat I'd say 5 might be low but who's to say.

Not at 75mph in Ontario Posted Image

Apparently trucks are governed at 65mph (105km/h) in Ontario.

Not that you'ld notice, looks like they're not going to enforce it Posted Image

Yeah, or if any of the trucks even have the speed limiter on 'em...I got passed at 130 on the weekend... Posted Image

Just like they enforce everything else, I guess.
