Fordracer
I have a 1996 DI with 284,000 miles on it. It will die when you let off the acellerator pedal when the engine is above 2,000 rpm when you are driving it or sitting still. The IPR will go down to 4% when you decel before it dies. If it doesn't drop below 5% when you decel it will recover and keep running. The IPR is 7.8% at idle and the ICP is 600. The ICP voltage pid doesn't work. I'm thinking the IPR is stuck but would like some reassurance before I try to sell one. I'm not used to working on these older ones so I don't know if there's something else I need to check. Bruce Amacker
IPR at 7.8% is on the low side, I'm thinking the ICP sensor is biased. Backprobe the ICP and check voltage KOEO and idling, which should be .18-.24v and .9v or so. Do you have another one you could try? It should be the later ICP which interchanges with all of the later 7.3 ICP sensors, here's my listing: (Larry!?) ICP sensor 96 and up; marked Julian date 6318 or higher F6TZ-9F838-A 94/95 F4TZ-9F838-A You should be checking all of the normal stuff like fuel quality and pressure, also. Don't forget the diag sheet. Unplug the ICP and I'll bet your problem goes away. Good Luck!
Keith Browning
Sounds to me like an IPR but I would definitely check the ICP voltages as Bruce said before replacing anything. I base this on my own experience and that I have had more bad IPRs than ICP sensors on 7.3L engines believe it or not but a biased ICP will directly affect the IPR. Bruce Amacker
My experience shows it to be about 50/50% on ICP vs IPR for a given problem, this one could be either. I suggested the ICP because it's easiest to check and swap. When I had the shop, we changed a shitload of both, but more IPRs than ICPs. Lately it seems like it's more ICPs than IPRs. Damon told me a year or two ago that he's never had a bad IPR. I couldn't believe it......

Fordracer
And now for the rest of the story... I back probed the ICP and it was right on the money, .22v koeo, .944v at hot idle. I disconnected the ICP and it wouldn't die anymore so I put on a test ICP and it still dies. Here's where the story gets wierd, the ticket is under the name of a transmision shop so I thought it was their truck but it belongs to a customer of their's. We called the customer and told him it needs an IPR and he said that's not it and is going to get a second opnion, he says it's the transmision causing the problem. Okay then, don't let the door hit you in the butt on the way out. Sorry I can't post a fix on this one.
Keith Browning
I just LOVE when they come to you for an answer or a diagnosis and then tell YOU that you are wrong.
