cbriggs
I was monkeying aroung under the hood of an 07 duramax today, and noticed the turbo is a garrett unit, and looks very, very similar to a 6.ol turbo, same-ish chra, same control solenoid and piston setup, only theirs has a position sensor in the hole (thats there for a positions sensor.)Duhhh. Why couldn't our engineers figure this out? rather than plug the hole.I took it for a drive too, they must have the vgt programming figured out a bit better, cuz man was that think snappy. Not much pull up top like either of our engines though.
Keith Browning
We have discussed the sensor issue in the past and the PSD having one would have alleviated a lot of diagnostic problems for us. As to why it was not put there on the PSD we will probably never know. Not needed because of the EP feedback? Not enough clearance between the top of the turbo and the bottom of the cowl? Cost? One of Ford's "better ideas?" The World may never know.
Aaron
67 Cent rule....instead of having to put that sensor on every truck, they only had to send one to each dealership. Savin' money, that's what it's all about.
LARRY BRUDZYNSKI
It may make a difference. I sell maybe 2 Duramax turbos to every 10 of the PSD 6.0's. Most of the Duramax failures are bearing related, unlike the 6.0 which is primarily due to coking issues.
Jeff_E
Someone told me the GM units use a ceramic unison ring. Anyone know if this is true, and if so, would the ceramic one fit in the Ford turbo?
Fredsvt
The Duramax turbos lose the center section bearings (seizure) usually when they spin cam bearings and starve the turbo for oil. Not the most common thing, but it does necessitate a new short block.
Bruce Amacker
It may make a difference. I sell maybe 2 Duramax turbos to every 10 of the PSD 6.0's. Most of the Duramax failures are bearing related, unlike the 6.0 which is primarily due to coking issues. That would make complete sense, since there's probably 5 times the amount of 6.0 PSD's on the road vs. '05 up Duramax's (with the Garrett turbo), right? I'm sure you sell may more of any VGT vs. a non-variable due to the obvious complexity of a VGT.
