I am wondering if you guys are replacing more turbos now on 2003 trucks after performing the recall. I used to do maybe 1 or 2 a month but now its 1 or 2 a week!!! It doesent help that the turbos are on backorder either. MAybe that's my answer?

We've been fixing the odd turbo concern before performing the recal.... more than we're used to but the VGT learn procedure does require that these systems be working good.

We had an extremely mild winter so we didn't get our annual crop of exhaust control related concerns... even the guys that "never let their trucks idle" didn't have half as many problems as we're used to...

Apparently the new calibration does not allow for much in the way of anything not working. Yes, I am doing more turbos now and it's alarming in a way. I have been boasting that I have replaced so few turbos that I sincerely hope that I have not been missing the obvious! I actually blame the customers. Most of these trucks have a lack of power or some driveability issue that the customers are NOT COMPLAINING about! I either perform the 06E17 flash and get a check engine light or I road test them and they can't get out of their own way! Repair orders only have the two recalls on them... not a single performance complaint.

I am also picking up more EGR faults and a turbo y-pipe leak. (heard that one coming) /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/laugh.gif

The problem turbos you are seeing, I believe, are on trucks owned by those that don't need (and perhaps shouldn't have purchased) a diesel... These things appear to be replacing the red sports car as penis extensions...

Jim we sell tons of those. My dealer sold over 750 trucks last year, most of them with diesel engines. Many have vocational bodies on them but a good number are are F350 Lariat's with lots of chrome and leather interiors. There are a few that tow a 5th wheel and some what actually use the hitch receiver but most are just toys. To each his own I suppose but those are the guys that are usually the problem customers. I live and work in one of the wealthiest areas of the country and apparently some have nothing better to do with their cash. Don't know whether I am jealous or angry.

Like I mentioned, one has a stuck turbo and wont get out of it's own way. Customer never noticed! /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/confused.gif Another has a cracked y-pipe and the truck also lacks power, smells really bad and he too never complained. "I thought that was normal." /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/drinkingdude.gif I guess their throttles never make it past 50%. They should have bought a F150! I look at it as these recalls just bring me more business! A few more turbos or EGR valves and a whole lot more front end work, brake jobs and service work.

We appear to be too much alike, Keith... I live in a very affluent town, as well... I'm told that we have more millionaires per acre than any other region of Canada... This is hard earned oil patch and logging money.

Not sure what our volume is but 80% of what we sell is trucks and 80% of those are PSDs... with a healthy dose of KRs and "Armadillos".

One customer was waiting for his KR and bought his loving bride a Mustang droptop on a "whim" (much like you or I might buy a bunch of flowers).

Picture this.... a big, black Excursion PSD 4X4... ALL the toys... moonroof... DVD... you name it. Nobody (AFAIK) has ever ridden in the back seat. Heaviest load I have seen this car haul has been a few loaves of bread and some "lean cuisine". The furthest it has been "off road" is the parking lot at the new mall....

Flip side of idiocy.... an 05 SuperCrew 4X4 with a 4.6 and our salesweasels sold this guy a 32 foot fifth wheel.... I bought my SuperCrew as a deal too good to pass up... that 4.6 can't handle my 23 foot (bought after the fact) and my only saving grace is that our favourite campground is only 15 minutes away...
