alright here's my next problem.

international bus with dt444e 7.3 whichever you feel like callin it. its an 02. driver was going down the road, all of a sudden it starts pouring smoke out of the engine bay and smelling of oil. my initial repair was a new turbo pedistal (the solenoid was soaking wet, and was the highest point wet) put it all back together, still leaking oil. did some more checking, found out the HPOP was pissing oil out of the box plug on the driver's side of the pump. was told by IH that i could not reseal it, so i got a new pump and reinstalled it. now, when we take it for a test drive, it'll be fine for 5 minutes, but will start pouring smoke again. with the hood open and idling, no signs of a leak. just puddles in the V. i put dye in it, but do not see any signs of the dye as i dont think i drove it long enough. if you leave it just idling, it will not burn the oil but it will still leak enough to drip down the back of the engine bay. i pulled the turbo yet again to see if it was leaking from the o ring, but nothing is abnormally wet (top of pedistal where its machineed for the orings was wet, thats it). i was thinking it was the oil plugs in the back of the head, but can not get to them with a mirror/hand to see if they're soaking wet. any ideas? the oil lines are not leaking, the plugs in the head that are easily visible are not leaking. i'm runnin out of ideas, and would definately like some help. thanks

That's T444E, and the HPOP probably was repairable, if you like to go that way. Some of the parts are listed only for the DT HPOP but fit both. The parts guy is there to sell multi hundred dollar pumps, not ten dollar kits.

Oil could be coming from anywhere so I won't be of much help. I've never seen the big plugs in the heads be intermittent, usually if they're leaking they're pissing big time. Your '02 has the newer style plug with the grooved head and blue o-ring that's not prone to leak, anyway. I'd be suspicious of the fuel pump, a bad HPOP, or other bastard leak. I'd power wash it, run it outside at WOT and crawl around it with ear muffs on.

Good Luck!

well i put rtv on the gasket and i guess caused it to not seal. but now, there's oil spray from the rear of the passenger head. the oil plug at the back of the head is not wet at all, the bottom of the pedistal is wet but with a mirror i can not see anything spraying. its hitting the passenger side up pipe on the exhaust casuing lots of smoke. i'm really at a loss. do not see any signs of oil dye, only oil in the valley is now in the back section right next to the drain hole.any ideas on it? i'm stumped and pissed, so i need help.

If the leak is intermittent and hard to find, it may be of crankcase vapors from a weird gasket problem or something. A trick I've used to find leaks like this in the past is to block off the crankcase vent and pressurize the crankcase with the outlet side of the shop vac. This pressurizes the crankcase to about 1 PSI and accelerates any leakage when it's a "only leaks when driving" complaint. Use some common sense when doing this- clean the shop vac out, or somehow prevent dust and dirt from entering the engine.

Good Luck!

Are you sure it's oil? What color is the fuel in the bowl? Could the F/F housing be leaking? Maybe you have a hose or oring split. Does the IH version use the steel supply lines like the Fords do? I have seen them rot out and get pin holes in them and only leak under load.

thats what i'm starting to think, is that it possibly could be fuel. but the fluid is dark black, and the smell when its hittin the turbo and pipes is pure oil. uses steel lines with a rubber isolater section between the fuel pump and the back of the head.

i'm gunna try that shop vac idea too.

i think the weekend will give me plenty of time to relax so i stop getting pissed at it.

changed the oil, putnew dye in it and drove it around. there's no dye up on top of the engine, i pulled the downpipe and the bac of the head is not wet. bottom of the bellhousing is wet with dye and dripping. turbo's not wet, butterfly valve area is not wet. no dye is showing up on top fo the motor, and i took it for a good half hour test drive after keith looked at it this morning and was as puzzled as i was. i dont want to throw a 1500 turbo at it, and i'm gettin more confused as the day goes on. any ideas would be great. i removed the convoluted tubing from the hp lines, removed the oil plus and put new o rings on them, cleaned the engine and down pipes, and still got oil burning.

Chris - I pass your shop every day and DUH! There are school busses parked there... can't miss 'em.

Yeah, it's a weird one and I am starting to think you may have had more than one leak on this thing. I couldn't see the top of the trans but are there any openings at the top the flywheel housing? I am wondering if you do actually have a leak at the crank. What throws me off is the smoke coming off of the exhaust up pipe... and no visible oil.

yeah, we did have a few leakson it. i'll check this morning to see if there's any openings up there. i just have no idea how its ending up in the valley as well. no areas wet except the rear most valley dip, and the up pipe's wet. i pulled the downpipe yesterday, no oil leaks on that head at all. not even wet. if it is in fact a rear main seal, than off to the shop it goes. dont have the tools to pull the trans here.

gunna do a little more inspection on it. too stubborn to let it get out of here i guess. thanks again

lol thats what i meant. i personally have a trans jack too, but i'm not bringin it here. i was lookin more, and the trans is pretty much soaked, but the back of the engine is dry. mayb it is the rear seal? i'm gunna pop the inspection plate off again and see if i get hit in the face with a gallon of oil or something interesting like that. if it is, guess i'm callin the tow company to come get it.

alright so i pulled the inspection cover..and oil poured out of it. almost a full quart of oil. i was kidding about the whole oil in the face thing..but yeah. flywheel is soaked, torque converter isnt though. starter is wet, and the front of the bellhousing from what i can see with the mirror is wet. its looking more and more like a rear main, but idk. i'm gunna see if i can see any dye once i get the oil off my head.

Without pulling the trans, you won't know if the rear plate is leaking or the rear main seal. I've seen very few rear mains leak on 7.3s.

I'd guess the oil is spraying up into the valley through the drain and hitting that up pipe?

How's base oil pressure, good or low? Maybe it popped one of those oil galley plugs near the cam plug, and it's pumping full oil pressure up towards the rear engine plate.

well i powerwashed the hell out of it, and it seems to have stopped leaking. its seeping slight amounts of oil now from between the addapter plate and the trans. i'm gunna wait and see how it is, it needs to get new steps in it anyway so if it is the rear plate leakin than so be it, and off it goes to the dealer.

its got decent base oil pressure, around 30 psi i think. sounded a bit low, but i'm not sure. when you rev it it goes up to 50 (but idk how reliable the dash is)
