Funky DTCs on an '08 E-450

I just had one in for a "general checkover" with a CEL on. When I went to retrieve the DTCs, I get P0606 Internal PCM failure and P1260 Theft Detected as the only DTCs. Now, this vehicle has had a history of having the IC replaced due to faulty gauges. Here's the kicker. According the HvBOM and Hotline, this particular vehicle is NOT equipped with PATs or anti-theft, yet both the original cluster and the replacement cluster came equipped with the flashing anti-theft indicator. The last repair (about eight months to a year ago) when the cluster was replaced, I couldn't start the truck, due to what I thought was a PATs issue (the theft light flashed fast).

Other than what I've mentioned above, there are no issues, driveability or otherwise. Just curious if anyone else has run into something similar to this. Again, the vehicle is an '08 model year E-450.

I had an 2006 E350 with p0606 hard fault and cel was on,all I could find was that the battery ground on the frame was very rusty, clean the ground up and the code went away,I think even if it does not have pats you still have to do a parameter reset,I put I pcm in for an abs problem on e450 w/o pats and I had to do the reset

Even if these vans do ont have PATS, the PCM and IC have to handshake when the truck is turned on. If the codes between the two match, the PCM allows the engine to start. No chipped keys or transponders, of course...

The hadshake sequence happpens fast. But if the IC or PCM is a little slow in waking up, then the handshake can miss it's target, and the PCM will store a P1260 and flash the theft light.

It is usually caused by a battery issue. Bad ground, like Mutter said, or weak batteries causing a PCM or IC reset during starting. The problem is aggrevated by the long battery cables on the e-series...

Make sure your starting voltages at the PCM and IC are where they need to be...

As for the P0606, I would suggest yoyu clear it, and replace the PCM if it comes back...

Now that you mention it, we had a couple vans in the lot that had been sitting long enough for the batteries to discharge. I did see some PATS codes and one of the trucks would crank but not start until after I rectified the batteries and cycled the key...

Thanks for the replies. I'm glad I'm not the only one who's come across this. Now that you mention it, it does make sense, because I vaguely remembered the batteries being very low at the time of cluster replacement. Just wondering, but did it also cause a no-CRANK type no-start for you as well?
