Bruce Amacker
Hey Guys: I had a student turn me on to this and it might be of value. The guy is a dyno operator at reman facility and when he has a 6.0 HP leak, he pulls the glow plug harnesses out to see where it is. If it's puking from the HP rail/injector area, it leaks oil profusely on that side from the glow plug holes while cranking. I know the bus bars aren't easy to pull on the early trucks, but it might save some time on diagnostics.... Comments?
Jim Warman
This is only one of the several places that a HP system concern can surface... Air test works quite well but sometimes we need to have the EOT up to full operating.... other times, we can source the leak cold - there is no "usual", IMHO. Late and early pumps are very different from each other and have their own pattern failures but not every failure fits the "pattern". Faced with pulling the bus bars or pulling the valve covers... I have to say that I am likely going to pull the valve covers anyway, at some point in the process, so I might as well do it up front.... Keith Browning
Actually, I never thought to remove the glow plugs, at least to just have a listen for air and determine whether a leak is on either side or in the middle. I use an open tube stethescope... Though I initially use the oil fill hole on the right side, late model engines no longer have that plug on the front of the left side cover. I have been removing the breather filter for a quick listen but removing the left glow plug connectors, or at least one or two will be much faster. I do this with large leaks that are clearly audible. Saves me time. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/smile.gif Thanks Bruce! Sometimes the simple things escape us. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/rockon.gif
Jim Warman
I can see where that would work... for some reason, I've dodged the bullet on later build HPOP concerns (all of mine seem to be early builds). Without having an ICP hole handy, I've taken to removing the left valve cover and using my trusty rubber hose as a stethoscope down the oil filler to try and source any leaks... I have no idea what it is, but as far as jobs are concerned, I seem to be a crap magnet.... Remember the 03 with 8 one month old injectors puking past the oil rail???
