Oil Fill Cap Severely Eroded

Have you guys ever seen an oil fill cap on a 6.0 severely eroded? I have an '04 with one that looks like it has rusted through. I know it's plastic, but that's how it looks. Just wondering if anyone else has seen this and what causes it.

Thanks!

One of the other 'suspects' is that most times the oil cap is removed, it's placed flat side down on the battery.. Also, some try and pin the cap damage to caustic cleaners like Simple Green/Biodyne but doesn't seem to be the case, otherwise a lot of other plastics in the compartment would be at risk.. I dropped one into an uncut solution of Biodyne and even let it sit in the shop under direct summer sunlight..Still like new.. They look to rotting/pitting as if the surface was breaking down.. Maybe something to the battery theory and/or heat as a contribution to the affects..

I have seen a couple similar to this one over the years but not quite this bad. Typically, if I find a problem with the oil cap on a customers truck its laying on the radiator shroud or on the battery where the last tech left it. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/drinkingdude.gif I vote for poor quality plastic.

We recently had an Excursion in with a really bad exhaust leak from the y-pipe which the customer let go for a long time. The oil fill cap looked just like the picture and some of the plastic conduit on the wiring was melted and brittle. Given that bit of evidence I might vote for heat as well.
