05 e-series long crank sometimes and stalls

I have a 05 ambulance here.Customer states that when its warm the vehicle will not restart. Also that the vehicle stalls sometimes. So i immediatly think dummy plugs or stc fitting.Go out to start vehicle had a very long crank watching oil pressure gauge not moving then finally saw oil pressure reading on gauge then it fired. Pulled 2 dtc's P2614-CMP output circuit open and P2617 CKP output circuit open.Cleared -retest and they are non continous.Drove the thing for like 20 miles couldnt get it to stall.Shut off after a good run and fired up no problem.ICP and IPR look normal. It does have a miss on cylinder 3 but only when fuel correction feature is turned off.So i guess my questions are Can a bad stc actually make the vehicle stall????The vehicle is running fine and starts fine now but if i do Air pressure test will this still identify my leak???Or am i going the wrong direction all together and should i be load testing CMP and CKP circuits?

I just dealt with this.... and it was kind of a pain in the ass to diagnose.

Look behind the cam sensor for rust buildup. That's all I can offer right now...my particular unit had rust buildup in the cam sensor bore that was causing this, also with no codes.

It's an Econo, right? FWIW, and the amount of time it takes on an E-series, I'd pop the HPOP cover off and have a peek at the STC fitting, just out of curiosity.

E-boxes are bad for the wiring harness to be pulled kinda tight. If you grab the harness right near the pcm and kinda where it goes down before it loops over to the engine and give it a good tug, you may be able to reproduce your concern. If so the sheilding cuts into the harness, and advise replacing the harness alltogther. Done quite a few of them and the codes you have are a good indication.

I would start with this issue. Make sure you don't have a low pressure oil pump that has had foriegn material pass through it...the other concerns are also valid but I prefer to fix the mechanical concerns first...but I guess diag'ing the harness would make sense as you may find major mechanical concerns (roller lifter coming apart and going through the oil pump) which would be the time to replace the harness?

Yea i know and i have had bad stc fittings where they only act up sometimes also this thing was taken to a local garage and they threw a FICM at it with no luck.Ive only done one harness on an e-series som far and it wasnt fun.

I concur with looking for a high persue oil system leak. The P2614 and P2617 DTC's when set together have always proven to the the RESULT of a stalling condition or a hard starting concern. In cases where o-rings are deteriorating they will reach a point when they just start to cause problems - problems that will be intermittent. Loose STC fittings will also exhibit screwy behaviors too. I either case they will get worse. Unfortunately you really need to simply go hunting and this being a van absolutely inspect every seal under the valve covers including the oil manifold, dummy plugs, standpipes and the injector inlets... assuming you get that far. As I recall the cooler can stay put.

Cam and crank codes more than likely caused by the stalling. I would suggest look at the low pressure oil side first because of it taking awhile to build up and if it builds of fine while cranking then I would test the HP system. I have not had much experience on E-series but our shop has had alot of buses come thru with lifters coming apart and needing long block replacement.

OKAYYYYY, forgot you had mentioned the oil gage not moving til it started. SOOOOOO, gonna have to go with the majority on this one as well and chase the oil system. But as far as things go here in the state of Vermont, I have never had a 6.0L set a cam/crank code with a mechanical problem.

I still don't trust penguins. Posted Image

I have noticed that a leaking stc fitting will drain the hp reservoir, or some of the hp system anyways, usually a leaking stc will result in base oil pressure not building until right before startup. Will usually be a large leak though to cause that.
