03 6.0L low boost issues

Customer claims that under hard acceleration for a brief period and then backing out and getting back in throttle, there's a period of no boost and smoke. Tech said that there were no codes found when the truck was brought in. WDS shows 28lbs. of boost, but after road testing, it did seem to have no power after an acceleration like getting to speed on the highway, showed virtually no boost.

Truck has 77k miles, and not much of a history. An EGR at 50k and a fan clutch at 70k. It does have a larger aftmkt exhaust and a boost & pyro gauge in it. Truck is used daily in construction and customer claims that it's pulling trailers a lot because we asked him about extended idling and "babying" the truck.

Ford says no to new turbo and no to a reconditioning of the present turbo without any codes, not that we could get our hands on a new one anyways. Appears that there is some sticking in the turbo. Any tips on how to proceed with trying to fix this turbo problem, short of replacing or rebuilding it?

How about fuel pressure and quality? It seems odd to have a turbo problem and no codes.

IH's fix for sticky turbo problems on the VT 365 isn't replacement, it's disassembly, cleaning and inspection, reinstalling, and a 20 mile road test.

Good Luck!

Bruce, Somebody sent me a copy of the International service bulletin. I have a partially written article covering the cleaning procedure. I am waiting to get my hands on a turbo to perform the procedure and take my own pictures... I wonder how that will be observed by anyone at Ford that is looking on. If the International boys are doing it then it's newsworthy in my opinion. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/thumbup.gif

The tech involved has been pushing to perform a "rebuild" on the turbo but Ford is being pissy about paying for it.

Keith, I was going through the IH document you brought out and that's the very thing we're wanting to do. We'll see what happens.

Sorry to ask such an obvious question(I hope). But, have you gone through the test procedures in KA? They can show an intermitant turbo after you get it hot.. Also, when you watch EBP_G(should still be there, you can also plumb a guage into the EBP hole to see for yourself) do you see a change when the concern happens? Maybe the EGR opening? What have you done for testing before decidint to tear it apart?

  • 2 weeks later...

A MAP sensor with a partially plugged line/orifice will cause this condition. I have run into this after an EGR cooler was leaking and there was plenty of muck floating around the intake.
