Not sure how to take this one.....

6.0 comes in on the hook today (there's always a light at the end of the tunnel, with our job it's just another roll back). Service manager calls me in, says truck is in from another shop (non dealer) for warranty work. Horray! Apparently the truck was in for either shutting off, or a no start. I go out to the truck, notice the air box, turbo, and other misc items in crates in the truck. Hmmm, sparks my interest. Pop the hood, sure as shit, they got the whole way down to the HPOP, busted STC fitting. First time I've seen the rear engine cover busted from this, I've seen the impact marks before, but never a busted cover. No big deal really, just brought up some questions in my mind. First, what the hell else is wrong with this truck, put a new STC fitting and a rear engine cover on this thing, that doesnt mean its gonna start. Second, the shop knew this truck was still under warranty, but didnt say anything to the customer until the shit hit the fan, seems that they werent worried about the customer while there was money to be made. Also, they only have to now pull the transmission to replace the rear cover, did they get scared or what? I've only had one rear engine cover off and didnt run into any problems with the bed pan gaskets, going to take the same approach this time and see what happens. Another thing, hopefully I'll be able to beat the piss out of warranty time, they dont know its already apart and diagnosed :-)

Gotta like it when half the work is already done Posted Image

I haven't had any issues removing rear covers with bedplates. I loosen all the bolts off then put the big scraper that's sharpened on all three sides along the cover to make sure it's sliced. As long as I can see a little titwilly hanging out between the upper and lower crankcase halves, and not 4" of bedplate gasket Posted Image we're good to roll.

I wonder how long before we've got guys pumping that groove in the block full of sealant through the hole?

Or how long before it becomes the accepted warranty repair procedure like pooping up the bedplate instead of checking for warpage.

We had a similar issue last year. Another shop removed the cylinder heads for a coolant consumption issue, then realized it had warranty and sent it up here in a box. We charged retail to put the heads back on and then replaced the EGR cooler under warranty.
