Mbl35
I never worked on a 6.4 before. Today i was informed that we are going to svc. a fleet of 10 ambulances, 3 of which have 6.4 the 08 f550 in the shop today to fit on the lift is on it's 3rd motor and had a check engine lt. Well guys i'd appreciate any pointers to fix these things-they run pretty hard bcause they're emergency units. Also if anyone could provide common part #s and common sst tool #s it would be much appreciated. Thanks.
Bruce Amacker
You have an IDS, right? You'll be lost without one. TKIT2006SD-FLM is the big red three box set of specialty tools you'll need, and TKIT2007AP-F is the bleed hose for the HP pump. There's a couple of sets of special wrenches for getting at the HP pump you might want to think about, I'm sure the guys will chime in with PN's. Good Luck! Aaron
I made my own wrenches out of cheapies from Canadian Tire or Princess auto for the fuel pump cover lines.

Mbl35
Thanks. We have an ids and we should be getting a vmm kit soon.
Bruce Amacker
I'm not wild about the abilities of the VMM vs. it's price. If you're a scope dude, the PicoScope does 10 times as much at a quarter of the price. Good Luck!
dieseldoc
I have been seeing the three box kits selling really reasonable on ebay. There are several on there right now complete kits and all 3 boxes selling for about 300 bucks for the set. just search rotunda tools. believe it or not these are easier to find than the 6.0 tool kits. Aaron
I wonder who's been sneaking those kits out of their dealership...must have a big lunchbox.
Mbl35
Is the egr valve puller and fuelpressure guage setup in the kits? Is there an alternative method of pulling the egr valves? Is it common to replace egr valves on these, just wondering because i did'nt notice any tsb's for egr. Any other info like are misfires common like the 6.0 or does the 6.4 just screw up in inconsistant ways. I appreciate all inputs and i'm going to go over these 6.4 posts as well. mchan68
Next time anyone has one of these apart, check the fulcrums on the rocker arms where they contact the valve bridges. Just my
Jonathan302
Next time anyone has one of these apart, check the fulcrums on the rocker arms where they contact the valve bridges. Just my I notice that too Mike. They seem to wear very fast on some truck. I have seen one that even start to wear the retainer of the fulcrum. Aaron
I don't think I've done the same repair on a 6.4 twice yet, aside from radiators and a couple particulate filters. I have changed a couple EGR valves, for different reasons. Make sure you get the updated puller, or keep a valve and housing in stock at all times. Fuel pressure can be measured using a standard low (0-15psi) fuel pressure gauge, I sure am glad I didn't throw all that carburetor shit in the garbage
dieseldoc
Supposedly they are coming from closing dealerships. I still find it interesting that you can get the 6.4 tooling off of flea bay as bruce calls it for so cheap, and guys are getting 600 bucks for one box of the 6.0 tooling. I dont work on 6.4s more than to change oil and fuel filters yet. I am tempted to buy the tooling now while guys are selling it for so reasonable. Makes you wonder why it is so cheap....... perhaps it is because someone has a very large dinner pail.
Mbl35
Yea well i hope it's just services when these things start coming in but with my luck it one would problobly come in with some crazy concern. I know one of them is on it's 3rd motor with like 20k and check engine lt. and some messages in the cluster so i'm trying to prepare as much as i can. We got enough going on with our 6.0s. Mbl35
Well looks like were not going to service that fleet for now cause we got enough of our own down and we need another lift, tools parts etc. I feel somewhat relieved seeing what goes on with these things. Aaron
Seems that the guys that maintain the hell outta their stuff have NO issues. I have customers that change their oil religiously every 3k miles and fuel filters every 12-15k miles and that's all I ever see their trucks for. I have customers that change their oil when their truck breaks. And they seem to have issues about every 15-25k miles. I have several trucks that I've worked on that have had warranty coverage denied by the service manager due to blatant lack of maintenance. 08 6.4 truck with 88,000kms on it, and the oil filter stamped FF, as well as the fuel filters, stuff like that.
