02 E-Van needs injectors

Hey guys, I've never put injectors in a 7.3 yet, let alone a van. I have the valve cover off already after doing testing. I'm replacing the right bank of injectors (per customer), and flipping through the manual I'm supposed to pull the left motor mount like doing 6.0, is that needed?

 

Also, I cant seem to find the 7.3 injector removal tool, any tips on how to get these things out of here?

I think it's number 3 injector that causes the problem. If you unbolt the solenoid and take it off the injector it comes out without pulling the motor mount.

 

 

To pull the injectors all you need is a long bolt that goes in the bolt hole that holds the oil deflector on and screw it in to push on the head and it will push the injector out.

 

Be sure to drain the oil out of the head by pulling the two small allen bolts out so the oil doesn't go into the cylinders.

You don't have to pull the engine mount. For cylinder 3 and 5, remove the 4 torx head bolts off the injector and then remove the upper pieces from the injector and you'll have enough room to get them out. Do the same with the new injectors (obviously) to get them back in.

I don't use the tools to remove the injectors. Just remove the oil drain and lower hold down bolt completely, then slip the hold down plate up and over the upper bolt and use a small pry-bar to pop it out.

To add to this, if you run into difficulty removing the two allen head plugs to drain the rails, you can remove all the glow plugs, and simply resecure the the valve cover temporarily with two bolts and crank the engine over a few revolutions after you install the new injectors, and that will push most of the oil out of the cylinders (at least enough of it, that there won't be any danger of hydrolocking).

Getting ready to tear into it now.

 

I remembered the old diesel tech always pulling the glow plugs and pumping the oil out, but I've already got it draining by the book, maybe I'll just double check.

Got the van running today, Thanks guys!

 

 

Just one thing I noticed, the O-rings on the old injectors looked like they were beat to shit, but the copper was okay. Is that normal for 7.3's? This thing has like 275,000 miles on it.

With those kind of miles, I would definitely say that's normal. Now the next question is, why were they replaced? Low ICP? Engine oil in the fuel? Misfiring?

Also another thing people only do once is forget to tighten up the bolts in the top of the turbo on a 6.0... the ones where the oil line goes on?

 

Right before, getting a phone call from some guy at an indy garage wanting to know a labor time for putting a front cover on an econoline.

 

I told him 3 hours.
