Mekanik
I have a 2005 Excursion with failed head gaskets. The thing has a tuner, big exhaust, aftermarket induction system with a bigger intake elbow and CAC tubes. This truck has one of those 200,000 mile diesel warranties. When my service writer attempted to get prior approval, he mentioned that they have an aftermarket air filter. The responded by telling us to have the customer authorize the cost for teardown. I wonder if they will deny this warranty claim.
Alex Bruene
I've had that happen from prior approval... "Based on the modifications listed, prior approval is not granted at this time. Recommend obtaining customer authorization for tear down and resubmit with information pertaining to the number of breach points on the headgasket(s)"... It really made my day when that happened, however, the customer declined the tear down, saying he was going to sell the truck. I resubmitted to let hotline know we were not tearing it down, and they replied that they would make a note on the vehicle's file, in case the customer attempted to take it elsewhere. GregKneupper
I would imagine that since it only has blown headgaskets and it is modified that they will be denying the claim.
Mekanik
The funny thing is that I just got done with a headgasket job on this guy's other truck that was a monster truck equipped with a tuner. If Ford happened to see those headgaskets, they would see that there is no sealing rings left and it would put up a GIANT red flag.

And where did they take it?????Straight to Rex's shop.
Alex Bruene
And where did they take it?????Straight to Rex's shop. He actually did sell the truck, and bought a Raptor. So, he can do whatever the fudge he wants to that. He belongs to the light duty shop now!
Mekanik
I don't think I have ever seen worse headgaskets off a 6.0L. I'm not sure if you can really see it in the pictures, but there is NO sealing material for cylinders 3,5,4,6. Ford called us back and said to just go ahead with the repair. They aren't even going to bother sending an inspector out. This guy got REALLY lucky. Lol
cbriggs
the degass bottle on that one must have been like a volcano!!!!!!!
gasgasman
I don't think the guy got lucky. We do 'em all day long like you mentioned. Like Service Manager said, "If we don't do it, someone else would". I don't even bring up the subject of modifications anymore.
Jim Warman
Not that long ago, we had an oil consumption issue... the seals on the turbo shaft were puking oil big time... The customer had no concerns with lack of power or lack of boost or.... Warranty asked for the turbo back... They took one look at the compressor and said... "That's dusted...". Their take on the subject? The turbo was pooched in more ways than one... Dusted trumps bad seals. We are caught in the middle.. the proverbial rock and a hard place... Ford on one side ready to deny a claim or audit us.. On the other side, the customer - whom we hope to keep forever and forever... Our only weapon is truth and honesty... having said that, what we don't say can be more important than what we do.... never answer a question that hasn't been asked.... and feel thankful when the question that is asked can be answered truthfully with "I don't know". I am glad that this truck is in our shop. Work is work, and I'm not too picky.
