Keith Browning
I know there are a few musicians among us. I was wondering if anyone has had any experience and has any advice on refinishing guitars. Long story short I still have my first bass guitar I bought when I was 16, an Ibanez 4-string. After an unsuccessful refinishing attempt the guitar has been sitting in the basement in the case for years. I have a renewed interest in the instrument and I am older and much more experienced with such projects. I once asked a body shop tech about painting it but he wanted about $250 to to it... after asking around that seems to be about the going rate. That is more than I paid for the bass 25 years ago. Fuck me. Is 40 old? Anyway, I looked around the Internet and found this website http://www.reranch.com/ that has great advice and products not to mention a forum full of information. Thought I would share whilst I was askin. The bass? Was my favorite too. Black lacquer body and neck. I am actually considering a different color leaving the neck black as it is still in perfect condition. I think the black neck, hardware and pickups would look sharp with almost any color. This is not mine but it is exactly the same.
Fredsvt
Hi Keith, You should give these guys a call. http://www.repairguitar.com/meet_staff.htm Kyle is the co-owner and my brother-in-law. I think they can do just about anything you want on the guitar, or at least recommend someone to you who's able to refinish the guitar as you want. Keith Browning
Thanks for the info Fred. I'll keep them in mind when it comes time to set the instrument back up. I didn't see any mention of refinishing which as I research this I see refinishing can be expensive. There are some specialists that do restoration and refinishing and repairs but this instrument is not a classic, heirloom or an expensive bass to begin with... it was my first and it plays well and I guess I want to keep it for a while more anyway. I have read a lot about the process and it is more about taking the time to do it right and use the proper methods. For about $50-$60 in materials I can hopefully do a fine job.
