Fan Stator

Okay, call me an idiot if you will. But what (if any) is the benefit to removing the fan stator (other than making it easier for DIYers to change a drive belt on the side of the road)? Funny enough, I just had one such truck darken my doorstep yesterday.

Removing the fan stator allows you to install one of them there Jim-Dandy V-Mac compressors... boy, they make if so pleasant to work on one of these trucks...

 

Not only that, If you get that pesky thing out of the way, it might upset the air flow through the cooling stack bad enough to create some new and interesting problems... goody - it'll give me something to kvetch about on interent forums...

 

Damned engineers... all they did was pump up the price of my truck by putting on all kinds of stuff that I didn't want - and all I really needed was a big enough chip so I can "roll the coal"...

 

Dang.. and he made a right purty job of that mod, too!!!!

This is fucking idiotic to remove this thing. I have seen this a few times and have seen some where they put in a 7.3 liter fan shround in its place. Did you see the one guy that said "does it serve a purpose". Really. You are asking that question. Of course it serves a purpose moron. These guys need to leave this stuff alone and stop messing with things they know nothing about.

This is the big secret to DIY auto repairs... if you don't understand what a part is for, you remove it because, if it was an important part, you'd already know everything about it.

 

This method is a real time saver since it allows the owner to forge ahead blindly with no consideration for cause and effect, and without having to waste a bunch of time learning anything about his truck.

 

Anyone remember this "zoodad mod" pic that Christopher H posted a long time ago? This shows an exemplary dedication to the advancement of the DIY mindset. None of those idiot stealership techs would ever be so smart as to conjure up such an ingeneous mod such as this.

I wonder if under heavy load with fan at high duty cycle it could affect airflow to an open design k&n filter that would affect an early model that depends on mass air flow readings.

Those two mods are some of the stupider (dumber?)things I have ever seen. Some people have too much time on their hands and too few brains to make good use of their time. When he says "My fan has not kicked on in over a year since my hgs were blown last", how does he know? Does he ride under the hood? What a dumbass! Even worse, he is getting other dumbasses to do the same thing.

Thanks for reminding me of that pic. I still am in awe of that truck when it came in for a hard start cold, lacks power, and uses oil concern--REALLY? It had the two hole saw cut holes on the front of the airbox lid and two matching holes on the back. Nicely done holes too by the way, AND the air box clips were not even broken! Sometimes you just have to shake your head and walk away--words escape you in some cases. I have said for years that FORD should make a special tool to open the hood that you are only allowed to purchase and use if you are a CERTIFIED tech at a dealer! I suggested that a few times, but Ford hasn't gotten back to me yet.

Great idea, but unfortunately it wouldn't work as some dumbass would figure out how to circumvent the system and post on one of those other diesel websites how to do it so other dumbasses could do it as well. Posted Image

Not long before the last gasp of American Motors, I recall hearing of a proposal for a "sealed hood" approach to vehicle service. Never anything concrete ( and back then the internet wasn't even ARPAnet yet.... hmmm the closest thing to a computer was "PONG" ).

 

Sadly, it is an idea that will never grow wings... There isn't one legislator that it willing to commit political suicide. There isn't one manufacturer that is willing to say "no" to a planet of wannabe mechanics wearing DIY T-shirts.

 

However, we are very close to having vehicles so complex that no amount of programming and hackery will get these things to go over 15 mph on the interstate.

 

We get our swollen bladder into the restroom stall... but we used a different door. I had an interesting talk with Alberta Infrastructure... Let me gather my thoughts.

If you look around there are some makes with almost as good as sealed hoods. Some Benz and BMW models not only have lost the trans dipsticks but have no engine dipstick. You drain, you add the specified amount, you reset oil level tracking system and then oil level is computer monitored for time to change and for when it is low enough that computer decides engine needs oil added. These require synthetic oil and the service interval for oil service can go to 12-13 thousand miles for cars operated for lots of highway use. No need to open hood to check what you can't check and intervals make opening it to change fluids rarely needed. Oh, The BMW's use their telecom hardware to alert the HQ that service is needing to be done and dealers will call owners with appointment options. There may be some others now using this feature. Guys, it is a different world............

Has anyone been following GM's soon to be introduced Dexos oil specification?

 

This will be factory fill on all 2011 models, Dexos 1 for gas, and Dexos 2 for diesel. They are licensing the approvals to oil makers at record fees.

 

By 2012 GM wants the AVERAGE oil change to be at 20,000 miles, with 30k or more not unheard of. They are reprogramming their oil life monitor systems for this oil. Do you think anyone with one of these cars/trucks will ever bother with opening the hood with what the salesman will tell them when they buy it?

 

I can see BYB changing his '11 or '12 GM with off the shelf, non approved oil, but still following the interval. Oops..

 

Btw, they do have sealed hoods, just ask my sister. Her last 3 cars, she had NEVER opened the hood herself for any reason. Her husband is just as bad.
