dieseldoc
Ok guys got a quick question here about a few of the parts that come in gasket kit. This is my first time replacing and egr cooler, and so far going well. In the bag with the gaskets and seals is three bolts with spacers, one torx head screw, and and M8 bolt. My question is where do they go, I am assuming they are updated parts or for fasteners that need to be replaced. The only issue is I cant find mention of it in the WSM or the other info I have available. I would guess it says in one of the many TSBs out, I unfortunately do not have access to them. My philosophy is if it comes in the kit than replace/install it. Your experience and wisdom much appeciated, thanks.
GregKneupper
The 3 spacers are for 03 and early build 04 turbochargers. If you have a later model than this then you do no use them. The torx bolt I believe is used for the little clamp on the turbo that holds the vgt wire. The m8 bolt is for the turbo oil line where it bolts to the oil cooler. dieseldoc
Thanks a million greg! this one is an 05 so I now have some bolts and spacers to put in my tool box. Now I know where they go the best part of all. Thanks again.
joshbuys
You do need to use the bolts, just not the spacers - ALWAYS USE NEW TURBO BOLTS WHEN REPLACING/RE-INSTALLING THE TURBO!!!! And the rest of the bolts in question are exactly as Greg said. Everything in the kit should be used on an 03/early 04, and the only *extra* parts on a late 04 and up should be the 3 spacers. The turbo pedastool was re-designed for the later build 6.0s and the spacers were incorporated into the pedastool.
dieseldoc
OOPS! I didnt use the new bolts to re-install the turbo. They looked to be in good shape and the heads had no rounding at all. Hope it will be ok, the truck is gone now. I know for next time though. Thanks josh.
Alex Bruene
I've reused turbo bolts a few million times now... I wouldn't lose any sleep over it.
dieseldoc
They looked ok I am not too worried about it. I guess if they come in the kit though might as well use them.
Alex Bruene
Use them if you have them... I don't go and grab 3 new bolts every time I R and I a turbo. Except for when they come with what ever part/kit I am installing.
Keith Browning
Or you can save them for use when you find a bolt or two missing while working on a truck. There must be a monster out there that eats turbo mounting bolts... probably hangs out with the missing sock monster too.

Except for when they come with what ever part/kit I am installing. I suppose you don't replace the o-rings or seals either?!?! They come in the 9T514 turbo mounting kit along with the bolts, WSM states it is necessary to replace every time, and I've personally seen the oil drain tube o-rings leak on a truck when the tech working next to me didn't replace them. THIS IS A SIMPLE CASE OF FOLLOWING PROPER PROCEDURE AND NOT HAVING TO DEAL WITH COMEBACKS OVER SOMETHING STUPID
dieseldoc
I am with you on the o-rings and seals. I never reuse o-rings on anything I am working on. I always replace fasteners if there is any question of their integrity it is just part of doing a thorough job. I would hate to have to do a job twice because I didnt replace 80 cent o-ring or a $1.50 bolt.
Mikill
I also replace all o-rings and gaskets when doing an egr cooler. I had one customer that I did a hpp on an 03 who didn't want to buy the intake gasket kit because he said he just did the egr cooler and replaced all the o-rings. I told him that I don't reuse the o-rings or gaskets. Once I started doing the job none of the o-rings or gaskets seem like the were ever changed.
