58 Volt FICM

I wasn't too sure if I was going to post this in the Parts section or the 6.0L section, but since it obviously pertains to 6.0L engines I guess I'll post it here. It seems like we have been having A LOT of 6.0L owners buying these like hot cakes lately. Just curious if anyone has any opinions to express. Here's the link:

Notice that you have a choice between a 48 volt FICM and a 58 volt FICM.

Ya, the 58 volt is called the "hot" ficm. Is that 'cause it gets HOT? I wonder what the purpose of that would be? I also wonder if it would overcome sludged injectors? If so dont let ford find out, or that'll be the next tsb instead of replacing injectors. I see they dont give core credit if the ficm has been "soldered". What does that say about solder repairing ficms.

I mentioned this repair to a Navistar engine group guy last week at a class I was taking. He was surprised that I knew about it and mentioned that they only use that repair (soldering the IDM) for export/oversees warranty repair. He said "make sure you don't do that for a warranty repair, you won't get paid." I did this repair a few weeks ago on a IDM that was getting tossed, (warranty did not want it back) Worked like a charm. Now I have a good test IDM.

They have actually been doing this for a long time on 7.3ls.They solder in a resistor and it boost the voltage to the injectors.People claims it helps with throttle response and what not.

I cant vouch for performance gains, but I have put one of the "hot" FICM's in a cash job just because the customer wanted to save some money and we have had luck with Swamp's products in the past. Worked fine and hasnt been back, in a stock truck though.

Like I said, no astonishing results, but nothing bad to say either.

Wondering, how much extra flyback voltage the extra 10v creates?

Does it alter the amperage draw?

I mean, we're adding 20 percent more voltage...

Wonder if there's any longevity concerns with the injectors?

That's a good question.. but then again, our "12 volt" systems see a good 20% more than their intended 12-volts under normal operation as the alternator is usually keeping the system at well over 14 volts while running. So I guess time will tell, hehe..
