Keith Browning
Anyone else waiting on any 40 gallon tanks for F450/F550 trucks? They are on backorder... until August? Has anyone found an aftermarket solution for this ongoing problem? These tanks SUCK and they are causing a lot of collateral damage.
gasgasman
There's a guy here in the Houston area that recoats the tanks with an industrial epoxy. They run around $250 with an exchange tank.
Keith Browning
I have been researching this and there are plenty of options for mid-sip tank replacements - increased capacity and plastic assembies... but nothing for the aft-axle which amazes me because there is guaranteed business out there. It is a simple tank to mold as well and there is a nice metal plate to mount it to. Since the tanks are not scheduled to be released for MONTHS I wonder is perhaps Ford is redesigning a new tank or even coming out with a plastic tank. I mean what else could be the reason for such a long delay? I did find this: http://gastankrenu.com which looks promising and there happens to be a franchise here in NJ. So, we called them and you bring your empty tank to them, they strip it, line it with an epoxy. Takes about 1 week and costs $475.00 USD... here in Jersey any way. You get a 5-year guarantee. Aaron
there's an outfit that sells 40 gallon aft-axle tanks, but they are upfitter tanks to replace the spare tire, so I'm not sure if they'll fit in a stock application.
Keith Browning
Well since we cant get fuel tanks we had this one reconditioned. First, they cut a hole in each side to allow the inside to be sandblasted to remove rust and the factory coating. I imagine the roughed up surface also improves adhesion of the new coating. Then the holes are welded closed and then the tank is coated inside and out with different coatings but they appear to be some kind of an epoxy. It ain't pretty but it shouldn't rust. mchan68
Well, it appears our local coffee truck now needs a tank too, due to the blood trail of fuel its leaving in its path. What was the part number for yours, Keith? Was it 6C3Z-9002-F?
