Fordtechnician
Anyone here have a cracked head on one of these yet? I have a 2003 F550 with 150k on the odometer here. It came to me with the fact that they couldn't keep coolant in it anymore. I suspected head gasket right away. From a cold start and moving it 75 feet there was tremendous pressure build up in the coolant tank. I didn't even do any tests according to the tsb, ie oil cooler - egr cooler. I lifted the cab and removed both heads. The left head is cracked! The right head measures .003 per the entire length. Should I replace both heads? Should I install a new egr cooler and a oil cooler while I have it apart? This is a early 2003 with a round egr cooler. This truck has a long trail of warranty history at another BIG FORD DEALER such as many fuel injectors, turbos, y-pipes etc. There are numerous bolts and nuts missing. Stuff routed wrong etc. I would hope if I did crap work like this, someone would fire me.
blown99
I would think yo uwould have to do both heads. I know international is doing an upgrade kit with the cylinder head replacement. It uses late 2006 heads, gaskets, rocker boxs', injector hold down clamps, and stepped dowls for the head to block locator. I was not able to get just one head the last time I needed one. Fords inventory may be different though. I would also at least do the EGR cooler as we all know they leak and the extra pressure in the system from the cracked head won't help it none. Torqued_Up
Never seen a cracked head on one of these. A lot of corrosion but no cracks. Ford still uses older parts for the 2003 and 2004 if I am not mistaken. I had a problem with a 2004 truck that needed a head and the gaskets and dowel size were wrong. After a certain engine build date they supposedly all take the so called commonized part. I t sounds like International is taking a leap and putting all ugraded parts on their engines. Ford will never do that. Their policy is and always has been that if it's not broken they won't pay. We are not to just install parts because they have been updated. No no no. /forums/images/%%GRAEMLIN_URL%%/readthis.gif
billcharlier
I WORK AT A FORD DEALERSHIP IN DES MOINES THAT MOSTLY WORKS ON SUPERDUTYS AND POWERSTROKES,I HAVE EVERY HEAD CRACK CHECKED THAT I HAVE OFF AND ABOUT 75-80% ARE CRACKED EITHER AT A COOLANT PASSAGE OR BETWEEN THE GLOW PLUG HOLE AND A VALVE,I THINK EVERY 6.0 CYL HEAD THAT IS REMOVED SHOULD ALWAYS BE CRACK CHECKED WITH NO EXCEPTION
