cheldmann
Does anyone know if a newer front cover will work on an older engine. As far as i can tell the only difference is the water pump size which i need to change the pump anyway. I have an 03 and a cover off an 05, the part number for the new one is 5c3z. Just wondering if theirs any other differences besides the water pump size.
Jim Warman
I would have to say yes.... memory tells me (a dangerous endeavour at my age) that ordering a new cover for an older engine will get you get the "updated" cover.

mchan68
Yes, a good upgrade on a 2003 engine would be to change the front cover and water pump to the newer model year versions. The 2003 engines use a 95mm impeller if I'm not mistaken, while the newer ones use a 105mm.
DieselD
I have run into this several times in the past. If I have a waterpump failure on an 2003 I sell a front cover too. EVERY one Ive not done this to has been back in a few days with another pump failure. Before we or ford knew what was going on we would spw the part and sure enough it would be back yet again. several times of this and hotline requests finally lead into the updated cover and pump from the later model year to correct the issue. There used to be a ssm or tsb a while back but I have not been able to find it. If you do a hotline request they typically give you the same answer and part number So yes on a 2003 I suggest running the later cover and pump. Brad Clayton
Because they had an excess of the new style covers and couldn't move them, so they flipped the switch on the self destruct mechanism and failures abound...
DieselD
I find it more then an excuse. the larger pumps/covers are fixing the issue. I install more covers on 04+ trucks then I do on 2003 anyway. gotta figure it was a short year and not all of them have pump failures so how could an intentional design flaw to "sell excess covers?" be profitable? Its something to do with the replacement water pump. by hand it feels fine, no binding issues etc. but once it runs and gets some heatcycles the plastic impeller breaks off the shaft. almost like it had contact with the cover and broke it. maybe it was a change in supplier? someone speced the size wrong? who knows. All I know is the larger cover and pump takes care of the issue.
